Did they ever fight each other in the vests ? Read an interview with Ward before where he said that prior to Athens he had never fought at light heavyweight and only moved up because his cousin was going for the same and only spot at middleweight where Ward had campaigned all his amateur career ( No SMW division in the vests ) Strange that they never fought, maybe Ward never fought in as many international tournaments as Golovkin.
Golovkin, it is rumoured, had a 350-5 amateur career. Definitely lost to Dirrel, but I've no idea about Ward. Would expect if they fought it would be known by now. Most amazing thing was Golovkin stating he'd never been knocked down.
I thought Golovkin deservedly got the nod in that to be honest. I think 2005 was the last time he was beaten, but his heart probably wasn't in the amateur game at that stage, turned pro the following year.
