Good one LeonMcS, thought it would take a lot longer to solve that one. Not many people knew of Harry. Hey, have a go at the question in post #371 LeonMcS. Think it is time for me to bring out some bigger attempts to baffle the forum members here; will bury my head in some old Ring Magazines from the 50s and come up with a few. Cheers all.
Mate, if I was unable to get this one.. I'd hang up the 'keyboard'.... The ghost fox.. red fox... Arthur Hardwick. Our great Jack Carrol.
Yes you are right Flamengo; to not recognise this star is a failing of mammoth proportion. Yet many Australian boxing fans do not know of, or appreciate the fantastic contribution Jack Carroll gave. Sadly, he is almost forgotten. Recently at a family outing, I was privileged to be given a copy of a newspaper clipping, scrap book from the Hardwick family, Jack's nephew in fact, Peter. We concentrate, often, to much, on the present and not the past, and reading his clippings has enriched my understanding of him as a boxer, and the 'wealth ' to the boxing nation which he provided.
Mate, Im not all that old... pushing 40.... nugding it closer to me anyway. Jack left a great legacy in Melb. I think a lot is now lost, his memory will endure regardless. Speaking of 'old timers' with little respect, or memory... here's a little 'who am I'?? This guy also needs some more attention, or a simple awakening for the Aust. fight fans..... Born in Sydney, 1910...hardly a brilliant early carreer, managed to cop several early beltings from worthy fighters.... In '33 his career took of via an opportunity to fight a world rated #3... Lightweight... Having got the better of this person at first attempt, plus a second occassion, I also managed to obtain the Empire title.... Will leave it at that... You need to earn the points to take home the Volvo!!!!
Jimmy Kelso is the man in question. Well done. ... the Volvo is currently being towed to your premises... Happy driving!!!!
I'm just gonna freeload in at this point, without answering one for a while, and put up an 80's vintage question: QUESTION: Who am I?? Aussie from a famous family fighting family, who got a world title shot in the 80's. Travelled overseas for the title bout. Trailed on points, but was giving it a red-hot go. Thrown to the canvas by opponent, who then delivered a heavy blow to the head, before I'd managed to regain my feet. (Shades of Brian Janssen vs Kirkland Laing - Brisbane 1985 - but not the one we're talking about here) The ref waved his arms seeming to signal the end of the bout. Believing that my opponent had been disqualified my corner entered the ring only to be told to exit by the ref. The ref spoke to me, thought I couldn't continue and awarded the bout to my opponent.
Jack Carroll, what a ledg! My late dad used to tell me funny stories & I know this has been around a long time, & I don't know if it's true, the first time I heard this line, dad told it. It concerns the Bep Van Klaveran fights. Round one Bep done alright. Round two, not so good, & so on. His trainer tells him to "have a go, he hasn't hit you yet" To which (I'm told) Bep made that legendary line "Vel ju bedder vatch dut referee, cause sumbody is" I worked with a couple of tough old fighters who both fought Jack. I was in the pits with Russ Critcher & I sailed with Herb Bishop. They both attested to his skill, & that has to be some wrap, because they pretty much fought them all. Jack was one of the GREATS.
Bloody hell... CHB.. Doug Sam???? first guess... I've never heard this story before... will take a few more guesses.... Troy Waters against Gianfranco Rossi.. #2 guess....
Hmmmm......Baffling.. Claude Noel (west indian) faught for a title in '81... I was guessing Renato Cornett... Im stumped!!!!
Won Australian & NSW titles, as well as challenging for world & Commonwealth honours. Fought many Aussie greats. Brother also won Australian titles.
