QUESTION: Born in NSW in 1931. Began pro career in 1951. Won an Australian title in 1958, and retired not long after. Came back after about 12 months out of it. Best known for having fought and beaten an all-time Australia great, a few years later. Retired in 1967, having fought a couple more very well known opponents.[/quote] CHB.. Hughie Dwyer is correct. The Volvo is yours. Will throw in a matching beige cardigan to complete the ensemble. Will take a shot and say Wally Taylor..... Was leaning towards Bobby Sinn... 1958 leaves me a bit questionable though.. Taylor took a victory over Carruthers.. post script...... Make that Max Murphy...
Many knowledgable boxers of my time, rated me as one of the greatest lightweight boxers that Australia ever produced; but I never won an Australian title. William Cowie "Poppa" Johnson was my boxing trainer. I never left Australia to fight. I fought many overseas fighters, some that would go on and fight for and win and lose world titles.
Max Murphy's the man - fought Fammo 3 times - won the middle one on points. Your prize a the beige cardigan - the same one I won!
Mate... tough question... my mind went straight to Trevor King. Freddie Dawson (american) spang to mind... Will take a stab in the dark..... Archie Kemp.
Not Archie Kemp. Probably should add that this fellow fought at Lightweight, Light Welter and last few fights as a Welter. Poppa Johnson as his trainer should give it away.....not Billy Rainsbury.........come on think, you can do it.
Mate... I have been completely baffled. Well done... 'bronco' Johnson wouldn't fit the bill... Roy Treasure cant be the man... Vic Patrick was the Lightweight champ during this mans era... I stuffed!!!! Whats the state he comes from??? Did he ever fight for the Oz title?????
More clues needed: Back then, he fought a man who as it would work out would have the name of a future USA President. This USA fellow won the world lightweight title about eighteen months after fighting and losing to our lightweight here in Oz. Ps: work a bit harder on your Eddie Dawson theme...
I feel quite foolish.. I always thought Norm Gent was an Aussie champ. Even whilst looking through the John Richards 'Australian boxing Championship History' nothing was available... needed the last clue to check Jimmy Carters record... Great question. Will read up on Gent a little more. Cheers.
Narrabri has produced 2 very classy H/W's... both around at the early years of the last century.... A book has been written, incorperating both of these men.... Will say nothing more. Who are these men???
'Boshter' Billy Squires is probably going to be one of them. Off to work. But will sneak onto the Net a bit later.
