We have a winner! Poor old Ronnie had the misfortune to get knocked out by both NIGEL BENN and JAMES TONEY. Toney has won the IBF Middle & Super Middle, WBU Lt Heavy, WBU & IBO Cruiser, IBA Super Cruiser tong) & IBA Heavyweight. His link to an Aussie was of course his famous sparring session with Danny Green. Good get WhataRock, thought for sure i'd have to drip feed some more clues. You win the harbourside mansion with the merc in the driveway.
I fought in Malta, Germany, USA, London and Italy (in no order) My elder brother fought also, and had a match with a good fighter in Australia. I fought as an amateur fighter also. I was such a popular fellow and fighter that "Mosh" Mancini wrote 'Sea of Tranquility' aboutr me. I became an instant national hero in the country in which I lived, due to my win over one of the greatest fighters of all time; I took his big title in his own country where 60,ooo people watched us, in fact, 3000 fans stormed a tv shop in order to watch the fight there ,because they couldn't get in to watch the fight; then the bloke I beat, he won his title back from me; I made four comebacks. In 1963, before Ali got a similar idea, I had a professional wrestling match with Irish Cornellius Murphy, but lost. I earned over $500,000 US in my time. Like many ex-boxers, I suffered from depression; and I had a sad end, suiciding at the age of 37 yrs.
Nice one ateri..Too many clues though, they will get this one easy. Great stylist, underappreciated by to many.
Yes I knew that I gave too many clues WaR; just felt that his story is great, too many forget about his great fame and skill. Hey, thanks Phil, I Will check that doco out, thanks.
I had 24 wins before my first loss. From the 67 fights I had, I knocked out 43, mostly with my devastating, powerful left hook, and I was knocked out 10 times only. I knocked out my own countryman, who went on and won a world title. I never got my chance at a (real version) World title, for many reasons, mainly and probably that they considered or thought I was far too dangerous. My nickname matched my work output. In 2003, 31 years after I retired, I made Ring Magazine's list of the 100 greatest punchers of all time.
even more interesting mate is the journo does his homework and confronts his old manager as to what happened to all the money Randy earnt during his career. It was a sad life Randy led that's for sure
I think Im pretty sure who it is..I remember those numbers clearly and everything checks out except for one clue...the man Im thinking of did challenge for a world title.
Yes I suppose I am a bit cheeky in not revealing the title he fought for..which is why I said real version..it was not a WBC, or WBA, or IBF etc.....it was a National World version, now defunct I think.
New Question: Nigerian who fought Aussie veteran for Commonwealth (Brittish Empire) title in mid 1970's. Had all of 1 win from 2 bouts going into this title match (how did he get a shot?). Lost to our bloke on PTS. Retired from the ring with the unusual record of 1 win and 3 losses that included a Commowealth title tilt! Who was our Nigerian friend with the unusual record??
