Hope I'm not drifting too far from the theme here, but I like to think fighter stories need to be kept afloat. A bit more on Herb. He was a very quiet man that kept to himself, & done his job well. He was a fireman/motorman. (His job was in the engine room) As I said, he loved a drink & he didn't balance too well with a few in. In port, he'd always come back from the pub with a dozen large bottles, & often dropped them. It became obvious to me that he was satisfied if he got most of them to the fridge, such was the regularity of "spillage". I got him to get the cabby to blow the horn when he got to the gangway & I'd carry his beer. In ports where they couldn't come past the gate, he'd come & get me. Other crew members would often alert me to his arrival. I didn't mind a bit. Lovely bloke. Everyone liked Herb.
Great to hear Herb loved a beer. I'll see how much detail I can find and try to post a thread soon. Cheers. Left a question for you all on the previous page.
How about 'YES'.. Old Man, you continue to bring up the goods. Bob Whitelaw put the first blemish on the record of Les Darcy. A bout in which these 2 men contested the Aust W/W title. Darcy took his revenge later on also.
This question is in the last 20 years. Out of my first 7 fights I only won 1 6 of my first 7 fights were for titles, 5 National and 1 state. After losing my first 4 I won my 5th fight which was a national title Who am I
Old Man... through previous chat, you might have given me a head start to the answer... Rick Budgen could be the man... ???
Who am I?? In a career consisting of 9 fights, I lost only one. I beat a furure world champion. I lost to another man who would contest for 2 world titles. post 1950's.
Who am I??? A post 1950's fighter, with a total of 25 career bouts. I never won a title. I defeated a future World Champ, yet lost two subsequent meetings with the same man. I also lost to the brother of another furure world champion.
