I saw the Marcos/ Maidana fight last night. What an exciting primeval fight.!
If you want to have a GLIMPSE, albeit of a Stanley Ketchel or Rocky Graziano's attack, Maidana [my favorite Rock'm/Sock'm modern fighter ],
Marcos Maidana is a slight reminder of those two heart pounding fighters
    of yore !
I think referee Joe Cortez is a great referee for the OLYMPICS. He over referees, trying to show how knowledgable he is. He didn't allow a rough, tough Maidana to punch inside, doing inside damage, which is Maidana's
forte...Terrible refereeing on his part. A ketchel, Jack Dempsey,Harry Greb,
Rocky Graziano, Henry Armstrong, SANDY SADDLER etc. wouldn't stand a chance with Cortez, and pro boxing would fall by the wayside...
In one round he penalized Maidana who breaking out of a clinch by Cortez, threw a tepid looking elbow that MISSED Khan completely, and was still
penalized one point...After watching boxing I never saw a fighter losing a point on a missed foul. NEVER !
Joe Cortez, FIRM but faulty ! What say you !

Cortez is unfair but infirm. Horrible, godawful referee. At least in his later years. I loved the fight and was very impressed by the grit of both fighters. After the first round, a distance fight was almost inconceivable to me. I bet on the under...Urg. Anyway, a new classic?

If I was in Amir Khan's corner for the rematch.....I'd barely have him boxing and moving around the perimeter of the ring behind the jab. While he did have some success with it last night, he was at his most vulnerable when he boxed and moved as Maidana marched forward. Maidana's punches are only effective when his opponent is drifting away from him or up close when Khan stood in the pocket. Infact, Maidana only really throws punches when he's coming forward.

Khan was actually at his safest last night when he got off first with the jab and throwing punches behind it and as he coming forward himself. Why? Because he was landing punches while at the same time Maidana could not get set even throw, never mind land. Maidana went into a shell when Khan was on the front foot, not even exchanging with Khan during these spots.

Exactly. When Khan was on the offensive Maidana couldn't do a thing. It was only when Khan started moving around him and stopped throwing anything that Maidana was successful with his attack.

Khan just needed to throw more and stay in the centre, he backed him up for the first half of the fight when he was being more aggressive.

I was shouting at him to go back to the body as well, he needed to slow Maidana down and he'd already dropped him from a body shot.

And about Cortez, just watch Hatton/Mayweather. He never lets any sort of in-fighting, he was pretty terrible in both fights.

Khan just set too higher a pace he couldn't maintain though, took a round off and got walked down and backed up. While he has the athletic advantage early he can dominate but once he tires a little and has to rely on defense and technique rather than athleticism he is hanging on for dear life. Maidana could counter Khan and could hit him whenever he got to mid range pretty much. His defense has improved allot but is still pretty basic and open. Keeping the jab pumping more and clinching at mid/close range is what Amir should have been doing to nullify Maidana. Still its easier said than done. Amir actually reminded a bit of Frank Bruno last night.

Burt I didn't really notice the ref breaking them up too much and I don't think he did but to be fair I was concentrating on the action

Superb performances from both men. Khan stunned me. No way is he that tough. He's a really, really tough lad. War Khan. Good boy. He's got chin, heart, and he's really strong. He'll be strong at WW. Maidana was superb too, what a pace, frightening.

Cortez wasn't great. Is he ever?

Incidently Burt, all of this has been covered about 15 times over in General. You should think about checking it out if you want to talk about now fights, it's not as horrible as everyone makes out.

At least Cortez is consistant in his bull****. Didn't he deduct Hatton a point against Mayweather for a missed rabbit punch?

I think it's funny that people are now saying "Khan has a good chin" .... no, he hasn't.

He's a very good fighter, and improving, and is tough. But I've always liked him. I think he's the best British fighter currently, and have thought so for some time now.
    Still, his chin is weak.

How can his chin possibly be "weak"? He got hit pretty flush by the best puncher at the highest weight he has fought at? And he didn't even take a knee.

cortez broke up the fighters when Khan had Maidana's right arm trapped and Maidana was landing repeated blows with his left- nonsense!

Loved this fight... I really love Marcos Maidana though and really, REALLY was at the edge of my seat in the 10th round!

damn Amir Khan is fast. People need to give him credit for surviving and winning this fight... he deserves respect for that at least!

Was a pretty good scrap all in all, lots of back and forth action and momemtum shifts. I was mostly impressed with khan`s heart and unwillingness to go down when he was being beaten from pillar to post in the 10th, I didn`t think he would survive the round but sure enough he did, looks like the move up in weight helped his durability somewhat.

However with that said he needs to learn how to block or avoid those damn uppercuts, Maidana was having a field day landing them almost at will and Khan kept getting his head snapped back each time. Gotta say if it weren`t for that ****ing disgrace of a referee Joe Cortez Maidana may well have broken down khan on the inside with his mauling and brawling tactics in close and stopped him late.

Khan is not a bad fighter, he is very fast and throws good multi-punch combinations with ease, but he needs to tighten up his defense quite a bit as his chin is not very reliable, and all the heart in the world won`t stop him from getting sparked clean out eventually unless he works on that D of his.

He was fortunate that Maidana was so reckless and wild in his attempt to finish him off that he could see most of what was coming his way even if he kept getting stunned, a better finisher would have had him outta there I think, but no matter he gets kudos from me for fighting a ballsy fight and hanging in there to the final bell.

Considering the embarassing blowout loss to Presscott this is a good win for him to help erase the memory of that defeat, he hung in there with probably the hardest puncher in the division and survived to the end in a close back and forth war, that should give him a significant confidence boost and I look forward to seeing where he goes from here.

Firstly, most of the punches that landed were not on the button at all. A few were on the side of the jaw, and some were high on the head, or on the face.
One of the most impressive things last night was how Khan knew how to take a punch without taking it flush. He kept his chin down, and those uppercuts were hitting him in the face, NOT on the chin. He was almost always moving away from the punches, riding them out, again, not flush on the point of the chin.

His skill and conditioning have improved loads since 2 years ago.

Secondly, Maidana was a tired and almost-beaten man for most of the fight. He had half the fight knocked out of him in round one, much to Khan's credit. His punches were mostly heavy-armed, slow, and tired, as if he was punching through water. They may have been heavy punches, but they had no real snap left on them. This was plainly visible, and it made the whole scenario even more enthralling.

Khan is an excellent fighter. But his chin isn't great at all.

Will people cut this lad a bit of slack. All i hear is hes chinny, glass jaw etc etc. Hes no Chuvalo granted but you'd think the slightest of punches were knocking this guy out the way people are talking. As mcGrain pointed out, he took the best punches from the hardest hitter in his division and didnt go down so how to fk is he chinny?

I wonder how long we have to wait before the first 'Maidana wasnt that good/ not a great hitter etc..'
