Dempsey is better in every dept. Dempsey Ko's the MUCH overated Marciano. Marciano and L.Lewis are practically god-like on this forum.

Marciano air conditioned the arena with some of those misses. When you miss that badly your also leaving yourself open against an explosive puncher like Dempsey.

Go ahead and list the contenders that Marciano faced that fit this description...Did the Rock even fight a live body over 200lbs? A 75 year old Joe Louis who couldnt lift his righthand perhaps.:D

So sir, it is about COLOR as you state and NOT the relative ability of the prime Jack Dempsey ...Color, color, color. This is a forum i thought on the ability's of fighters of the past, not on social agenda's ...It permeates every aspect of boxing and tars fighters forever who are disliked by certain posters...You sir refuse to believe that after the race riots following the Johnson/Jeffries fight, the State boxing commissions banned Black?white heavyweight title bouts. This is a fact whether it fits your agenda or not.
History is history whether we like it or not...So I cannot debate with you anymore as you deny what occured, cause it doesn't fit your wants...
I, sir have an aversion to how black fighters of the past were treated. You don't have a patent on morality, but I cannot deny that like it or not
Dempsey was not responsible for the riots following the Johnson/Jeffries bout and for boxing commissions banning interacial heavyweight title bouts during his reign...
P.S. as for me bringing up the Robinson beating at the hands of Tiger Jones
in 1955 after a Robinson 3 year layoff, it is because todays Dempsey naysayers {not you necessarily] always compare the Dempsey of his fight
with Gene Tunney after a THREE year layoff, as the true Dempsey of his prime whilst comparing him H2H with other fighters, but Robinson is NEVER
evaluated on this fight with Tiger Jones...A double standard I am sure of...

Who would have thought a hypothetical mashup between the two most polarizing heavyweights would result in a heavily contentious debate? I am shocked...

Was it the low Ring IQ, speed disadvantage and lack of pop that kept Charles, Walcott and Moore from capitalising on this tremendous hole in Marciano's game enough to stop him? Honest question.

Not at all. For all of Dempsey's fleet footedness and speed advantage he wouldn't be trying to out-box Marciano. He would do what he always did and go after Marciano like a tiger. Unless he can catch Marciano cold or good early, It's difficult to foresee Dempsey winning. While it's a bias source, Goldman basically said that any fighter that went after Marciano would lose. I think Marciano has the stylistic edge in this matchup if anything... or maybe no edge in reality. I probably just think he's a higher quality fighter.

    Back to square one.

Anyway, Dempsey is undoubtedly part of the Heavyweight pantheon and an iconic figure in boxing history. His infectious, aggressive style sparked the imagination of an entire generation and directly inspired a young Mike Tyson some 60+ years later. God knows he had the physical tools, the speed and raw power to execute it in devastating fashion. One of the few - and really the first - very great bob-and-weave heavyweight swarmers and one of the best left hooks in particular, in division history. 25 first-round KOs is a testament to the dynamite he packed in his fists and a notable accomplishment regardless of one's perception of his opposition. It's not his ability that's questionable.

Always liked this documentary. Check out from 6:40 onward, you might like what Mike has to say:

As far as Robbi, they certainly do hold it against him from what I've seen. That's primarily the Monzon and Hagler crowd though. :deal The difference in cirumstance is that Robinson wasn't sitting on the Middleweight title during those three years of inactivity/retirement and had dramatic triumphs over Olson (twice), Fullmer and Basilio after losing to Jones and well past prime, further illustrating his greatness.

Burt, the Tiger Jones point is excellent, accurate and way over the head of many here ..

As far as Marciano goes, you cannot overstate the sociological impact he has for some who frequent this forum and as a result cannot expect rational thought or comments from them regarding Rocky ... what you have is a small but persistent Marciano mob that view him as a deity and assign him with extra gears ( heart/stamina/punch out put/chin) beyond any other exceptional champion to support their arguments and to compensate for his real life lack of size, actual skill set and limited opposition ... and of course if you simply respect and like Rocky as the great fighter and champion he was but don't share the cult like devotion the nut huggers attack in their consistent, silly and predictable manner ... it's funny, amusing and a sociological study in itself ...

HoI, don't get reasonable on me.:hi:Dempsey was a great fighter because he had "unique" qualities in his prime years seldom obtained by any heavyweight in history. Like it or not, after he hooked up with Jack Kearns
Dempsey beat all in front of him who were logical contenders except of course the aformentioned neglected Harry Wills, the #1 heavyweight contender of his era. I cannot deny this, but it is equally true that forces beyond Dempsey made it virtually impossible for Wills and Dempsey to fight...Too, too bad this fact is true...But Dempsey and Wills DID sign for
a bout by a Michigan promoter who was trying to hold the bout outside the mecca of boxing MSG, but he could not come up with backers with dough for the fight and lost all his deposit money, canceling the fight...This is true HoI. My dad used to tell me about this event [the signing] and I have seen numerous photos of it..So Wills lost out on his opportunity and it is sad that he was a victim of racial fear of that less informed time...
Incidentally, in the 1940s I saw an elderly ramrod looking Harry Wills
standing a few feet from me at Stillman's gym, watching the fighters in the ring...Also saw the Harry Greb old opponent Kid Norfolk chatting with some people at the famous gym...
So let us agree to disagree [not too much]...:hi:

Thank you he...Not to be redundant i saw Rocky fight ringside and saw him train at Grossingers Airport in Sullivan County, NY...I loved Marciano, but he had flaws namely he missed half his punches and against a prime Dempsey or a prime joe Louis, each who had great handspeed , I believe as most anyone of Rockys reign believed ,would beat him to the punch and kayo him...His reputation on ESB has soared, but in his day ,Marciano
would have been a big underdog against a young and faster punchng
Dempsey and Joe Louis...No man that could miss half his punches survives
a Jack Dempsey nor Joe Louis IMO...Cheers he :hi:
P.S. The Tiger Jones defeat of Ray Robinson after a Robinson 3 year layoff
never affects the standing of Ray Robinson's reputation with the ESB crowd...Rightfully so. But all the Dempsey detractors gauge the ability of
Jack Dempsey, watching the 32 year old Dempsey after not fighting for
three long years, in his unwise bout with a prime master boxing Gene Tunney in 1926...Dempsey was a shell of himself that night, who hadn';t fought in 3 years, without a tuneup fight, without his long time manager Jack Kearns who was suing Dempsey, and Dempsey's close brother Bernie
just committed suicide, killing his wife also, just before the bout...All this is conveniently forgotten by uninformed posters today, whilst a Robby beating by Tiger Jones doesn't diminish Robinson's prime years reputation...Sad...I never met Dempsey except seeing him by his restaurant on Bwy, but by all standards was a fine and decent gentleman
who was admired by all...In his PRIME a handful for any fighter that ever lived...Just ask Sam Langford, wherever he is.:hi:
