All I know is that his name belongs along side Barrera, Marquez, Mayweather, Mosley, Pacquiao, De La Hoya, Hopkins, Morales, Lewis, the Klitschko's, Jones Jr, Tysu, Tyson, Holyfield, Benn, Eubank, Collins and the other modern greats I've seen. Of that list he's also top of who I think is least likely to have taken PEDs as well but everyone has their own preference but he was clearly a stand out boxer and has an under rated resume imo.
Of Calzaghe's time he was a great. He even spent a little time as p4p number 1 in many people's opinions. After Mayweather retired and Pacquio lost to Marquez in many people's minds Calzaghe was number 1. If you are one of the greats of your time, that is when you become an ATG who enters fantasy match ups with other ATG's.
maybe your opinion but joe was never #1 lb for lb. pacquiao never lost to marquez and both were ranked ahead of joe. nice try.
Calzaghe is very overrated by crazed Cal nuthuggers only, which honestly there isn't that many of them. Most people actually underrate him quite a bit. He'll be a HOF'er for sure and deserves it. I haven't made a top 100 list in a long time, but I'd have Cal on there I think, somewhere between 85-90, tough to say without actually sitting down and making a list which I don't have time for anymore unfortunately.
He doesn't have a case for top 100, which is no shame at all, because there's been a ridiculous amount of great fighters in boxing history. Calzaghe was an excellent fighter with a fine career, but i wouldn't label him as a Great. Honestly, even guys like Barrera and Morales - clearly greater fighters than Calzaghe - would struggle to get in a top 100. It's stupid how deep boxing history is.
no matter what these calz haters say, there's nothing calzaghe could've done better with the era he had. He tried as best he could from short money to traveling abroad back in '01 to fight bernard hopkins but hopkins priced himself out of the fight. There's an actual transcript from ex showtime president jay larkin on this. If Joe doesn't get ATG status then it was just his destiny to not be able to even aim for it, because he fought who he could when it mattered. His hopkins win looks pretty good right now, huh? Seems without joe in the frame hops still has 175 sewn up years after joe beat him. Yes, Joe is an ATG.
Quite frankly, considering the range of wins he had across the number of years he had, the amount of title defenses never having lost the title, the fact that he did truly unify his weight class by holding every single title without ever being defeated and the fact that he faced top fighters for other a decade.... Calzaghe gets over-rated by a few people here but under-rated by the majority. The fact is that his volume of work is as good as any fighter of his generation. He never lost which gives him the mystique of "What would it take to beat him?" and he did so while fighting at least 5 "A" class fighters and 1 elite. Numbers you can't argue with. 24 title fights 24-0-0 in title fights Held all 4 titles within a 2 year period in his weightclass (SMW) Was Ring #1 for approximately a decade in his weight class. Moved up and took the Ring LHW championship off a guy who was P4P#2 and smashed the crap out of the previous Ring LHW champ, then smashed the crap out of the Ring MW champ and then regained the Ring LHW title by smashing the **** out of the existing Champ. Beat the pre generation of fighters (Eubank, Woodhall) Beat his generation of fighter (Reid, Sheika, McIntyre, Mitchell, Veit, Hopkins) Beat the next generation of fighter (Kessler, Lacy and to a lesser degree Bika) The guy deserves a Top 50 place, anyone disputing that, wait 15 years and see how time reasserts how special his achievements were.
I want to respond to this post and congratulate you on it because I'm surely the only one on this thread who read the whole thing. Every other poster on this thread is incapable of reading that much without losing concentration. You're only a handful of the old posters on here who really know there boxing along with me and intentional butt and a few others. hope you stick around because this place has really become a joke now. I also have Joe inside the top 100 easily.
Sad when fans put more stock into paper achievements than actual quality opponents on a resume. Calzaghe's no where near a top 50 list. No where near.
