    Good post.
Vingo was apparently a good prospect.
I'm not sure where this "looked like a fawn" struggling to stand up comes from. I'd imagine such a person wouldn't be anywhere near a boxing ring in the first place.

I had an elderly grandfather who passed a few year back age of 93. He lived through Louis and, Marciano, and used to talk about them as if they were living. Boxers back then really meant something to the fans. His favorite boxing moment was meeting Dempsey in his restaurant and shaking his hand, but the story as to what happened before is epic. Circa sometime in the early 1950's.

Some older war veteran with a cane walked in and started trouble, calling Dempsey a draft dodger among other things. Things got real quiet. Dempsey confronted the old man, who was willing to give it a go.

Dempsey looked around the room. He had a lively one his hands and decided to give the patrons a show. As he moved around with raised fists mocking him, the older timer lunged forward and missed with a haymaker! The trouble was his cane hand slipped. As he fell forward the top handle of jammed into his crotch. Down he went. Then Dempsey counted him out! The joint was cracking. After the count of 10 Dempsey screamed something obscure and the old timer was escorted out. Upon shaking his hand, my grandfather said I couldn't hear your scream, the noise had drowned it out. What did you say after the count of 10? Dempsey's reply, oh, it was a nickname for a woman I used to know.

WOW, that type of stuff just doesn't happen anymore.

We watched the Byrd vs Williamson title fight together. One of the worst titles fights of all time. He said back in his day they would have thrown stuff into the ring, and it looked like neither were fighting. People would pay to see either again. Funny stuff.

On size, he acknowledged the guys in his day were too small to competitive, but that didn't matter to him as they were " real fighters "

In the opinion of him and his friends, Marciano was a solid champion, but not in Dempsey or Louis class. Pretty much how historians see it.

What a goofy rant. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I'm sure that you and your dad thought the world of this tough, dangerous 6'4 189-lb behemoth who'd never fought beyond 6 rounds, but surely you can understand why us youngsters don't consider a win over someone like him as much of an indicator of how Marciano would fare against much bigger, more experienced, more skilled modern heavies?

Thanks Burt! Amazing stuff. On film, Rocky is definitely one of the most impressive boxers Ive ever seen!

The people here dismissing Burts first hand experiences are being dumb.

Shows that you have 0 interest in learning anything.

No kidding. That idiot was making blanket statements about people from other countries yesterday and now gives me a long winded lecture on using the word " tomato Can" which is uttered by people here about 50 times a day... I suspect its retribution for the way I bltch slapped him.

Who did you see Vingo beat which led you to believe he was a " helluva prospect" Burt?

Yes, he answer two separate questions posed to him by reznick. And the other questions.

I think Marciano would have done well in Holmes era too, but I didn't seen him fight Vingo in MSG in 1949.

Get the hair out of your backside. This is a public forum and its not unreasonable to ask someone WHY they feel a certain champion would do well in another era based on a performance against a guy who's career was notably limited. Maybe you didn't like the way I worded it, but that's tough.. Get over it..

Are you insinuating that this can only be measured by fighting for the lineal belt or something?

Is Gennady Golovkin not a helluva prospect?

Are we that dumb that we can't discern talent for ourselves, and have to rely on numbers written on the opponents stat sheet like a bunch of mindless robots?
