I understand why people don't like it, and I would much rather watch a FFN card than a Prizefighter. But I will watch any boxing, and it can be very entertaining at times.
Prizefighter is great when the get it right but its so easy to get it wrong. The cruiserweight (with the oldies), heavyweight (1st) and last one all show it can be a entertaining nights boxing. A lot more have shown some of these fighters shouldn't be doing three rounders like the LWW one i think with Rees and Barnes.
im not much of a fan of prizefighter but i always give it a watch , most of the time i end up wishing i was watching a normal boxing event tho.
I don't want to go off on one and if you like it fine, but as you say, you'd much rather watch a ffn card and thats what really winds me up. They've flooded the schedules with a competition that is for b level fighters and it means our best prospects aren't getting out cos the dates are taken. As if that wasnt bad enough, these guys are then getting title shots they dont deserve off the back of it. Audley harrison had no business fighting for a European title. He beat nobodies in Prizefighter and then got a shot, which ended up being against Sprott who wasn't even in the British top 10 and now look, he might be fighting Haye for a world title. That is bull **** and we should be seeing Haye v Klitschko. Another situation we had was the Bellew v McKenzie fight going tits up because suddenly Mckenzie is considered to have a profile and ability that means he can be steered on his own route to success. That's bull**** and these guys should be fighting our prospects like Bellew. Beating bums over 3 rounds doesn't mean your suddenly a championship level contender. Quigley and Dodson were going to be in prizefighter. They should be fighting DeGale and Groves.
This is a very good post, Raw but a good effing post, Prizefighter is affecting the boxing scene, I mean the winner of this next prizefighter is going to fight Groves Im told, Now common people are gonna try and tell me that cos you win 3 3 round fights you deserve a title shot??? If this is the way pro boxing is gonna go then I'd have stayed amateur..:-( We need more even matches and all the domestic lads fighting each other, I say just put matches all in for purse bids and just keep doing that until you are left with 2 top fighters in each weight domestically, I swear I wish I had a stragle hold on the british Boxing scene..:good Imagine the board did this in every weight DeGale V Dodson Groves V Quigley Salam V Anderson Dilks V Smith Just let fights sort themselves out at every weight, The above is just an example by the way..:good What you guys think??
Cracking post. My suggestion, Tony, is this. You put together some sort of break away faction - like darts has the BDO and PDC. Because them fights you've suggested are common sense, get-it-on, money makers that the domestic fan wants to see. Straight away in four fights, you would go some way to properly establishing a domestic division as opposed to throwing a potential unknown into the title picture by way of 3 unconvincing wins in Prizefighter. However, that's not to knock Prizefighter, as I was looking forward to seeing Doddo and Quigley go at it again. Imagine them 2 guys over 3 rounds. :bbb Where do you think Tony can go from here? It sounds like he's going to give up trying to make 12 stone anymore. Is there a future for him domestically at LHW.
I spoke to him recently mate and he said he's just fed up making weight and can't do it anymore, He has a future, He has vast experience and is game so he'll have a good career I feel... Like I have said in the past the board should just put out a load of eliminators and just keep doing that in every weight, They were doing great at the start of the season but seemed to let it die off a little?? Hopefully they'll do it again at the start of the new season..:good
Great posts by both GrovesvDegale and yourself Tony. This Prizefighter thing is really getting me down, its a cheap ratings puller by Sky that they are now over saturating to pull in the casual sports fan. The real boxing fan knows most of the fighters in there are either shot, raw prospects or people that will never go beyond domestic level. I'd much rather see them use their resources to profile up and coming young boxers (of which we have a lot) in a magazine style show or if they dont have the time to do that at least do more profiles of people before their fights rather than just showing the fights themselves. This means people will then follow the fighters through their career as they have more of a personal interest in the boxer. It's a proven winner as shown with HBO's 24/7 and with how ESPN have features on fighters before the fights on Friday Night Fights sometimes!
theres several problems with that Tony. 1) there is a lack of intrest in the eliminators. John Watson vs Willie Limmond, which is a fight i would like to see, was orderd as an eliminator by the BBBofC and there wasnt a signle bid. Then we have Maloney on sky saying nobody wants to fight John Watson when all he had to do was put in a 5k bid. This happens quite often. 2) Theres more money in a prizefighter win than an eliminator. Quigley opted to fight in Prizeifighter rather than fight Kenny Anderson in an eliminator. He was even offered a fight with Darren Barker at middleweight for the British title and turned it down. 3) Once these fighters win eliminators, they still wait over a year for a title fight. Sky as the only broadcaster of boxing need to use this power to change things for the better. They need to meet up with the BBBofC and the 4 promoters it works with (Warren, Matchroom, Hatton and Maloney) The board need to come up with a British rankings system (remove any fighter at world and european level) which is published on a monthly basis on there own and Skys website. This way we no whether someone is a legitimate challanger or not. If me and Kosaros can do it why cant the BBBofC. Winning the Commonwealth title should give you an automatic position in a eliminator which can double as a Commonwealth defence. Winning Prizefighter should also give you a high ranking, perhaps a position in an eliminator. Sky need to make it clear that there is an order of value for title fights and that British will be seen ahead of the Commonwealth. There only 4 divisions where you could rank the Commonwealth champion ahead of the British (Sexton over Chisora, Olusegun ahead of Daws, Burns over Skykes, McDonnell over Hall) and in 3 of those cases the Comm champion holds a higher title or has a fight scheduled for a higher prize. The level of Hattons main events this season have been appalling every fight is for a vacant title with fighters who have not earned there shot. Sky need to make a minimum requirement for a Friday Fight Night. This should be Main Event a) World Title (No IBO, WBU only major 4) b) World Title eliminator/interim c) European Title d) British Title e) Commonwealth Title Co-Main Event a) Another of the above b) British title eliminator 3rd tier fight a) English/Celtic title b) EU title c) area title d) high level prospect Its a lot of idea but I don't think anyone could deny they would improve the sport in this country.
Agree with a lot of that Rob except this bit: "Winning Prizefighter should also give you a high ranking, perhaps a position in an eliminator." No it shouldn't. What does winning a three rounder prove? Prizefighter should be binned.
Its winning three 3 rounders though. and in every competition theres usually at least 2-3 guys in the top 10 in the country. its not going to get binned it makes more money than normal friday fight nights there not gonna chuck it.
