Jacobs vs Quillin Saturday night. Vegas has Jacobs as a +125 pick'em. Quillin is crowned as the Champ of Brooklyn right now and has a lot of hype going in his career. Jacobs has had a great comeback after beating cancer, and has some elite skill level in a lot of his boxing game, when he was lauded as a potential ATG in the amateurs. He is also one of the most frustrating fighters to watch and i'll break down why.

This is an exciting fight and even though it shouldn't be IMO but here's my ****ysis:

Quillin ****ysis: Quillin is a big hard puncher, decent speed, likes to counter, and knows how to find and stay at his power shot range. He underutilizes his jab, but so far hasn't really needed it, in favor of hooks and overhand rights. He has mediocre defense at best and at times it is nonexistent, he doesn't like pressure, and his punches have a lot of tells for a good boxer to pick off. He fights more off aggressiveness and coordination then intelligence...He looks prettier then he is....meaning he is an athlete with good coordination but it doesn't translate to reflexive defense or good positional technique and footwork in his boxing. As a fighter with the hype hes got.. Hes more like fire in a bottle then the real deal. He's from the Danny Garcia school of powerpunching... which include lunging hooks and bending down so low and moving your head to the left to generate immense power to throw those BIG power shots and overhand rights without even looking at your opponent, rather your eyes are on the canvas, to come up with KO's and KD's. When he does defend -- he likes to slip and crouch-- something he does well is counterpunch with power shots quickly from these defensive postures ala Joe Frazier-esque, look for that as his main weapon early. Quillin is no smokin Joe though. A good scientific boxer can systematically deconstruct him and cleanly knock him out and pop the hype bubble, because they will have no problem handling and punishing these off balance, out of position power shots, his lack of responsible defense, getting in his head with pressure and keeping him fighting off the back foot and from setting his feet (ie Rosado later rounds) and capatilize on the opportunities all the holes especially a straight right hand cause in his defense and lack thereof provide to make him frustrated quickly. His heart and his chin his intestinal fortitude will be tested for the young contender in this fight, and in my opinion.. they have a decent chance of failing.

Notable fights: Qullin beat the corpse of Hall of Famer Winky Wright, he got the stoppage vs Rosado but IMO was lucky to the fact that Rosado was winning the later rounds on my card and was about to take him into very deep waters in the championship rounds when the fight was stopped. Quillin looked like he wanted no part of it and was not handling the pressure well from being walked down and backing up at all, before he got bailed out by a lucky cut which was caused by a counter punch he threw. Also he barely *correction* fought to a draw against big punching, but long exposed as overrated, former Emanuel Stewart (RIP) prospect Andy Lee!! Thats is a huge underwhelming marker for where his development as a fighter is at so far. Then in his last fight he knocked out the relatively unknown Australian, Zarafa. But Zarafa who displayed nice speed, a nice 1-2 specifically a short right hand which landed flush a couple times on Quillin.... Zarafa didn't know how to sit down in the pocket at all, didn't have much defense and frankly looked lost as soon as Quillin threw any counter punches, and didn't know how to vary up his speed to set up other angles and punches. Hardly a world class fighter yet he was able to tag Quillin without much trouble and pretty much expose his iffy defense before getting KOed. Interestingly Jacobs was actually commentating this fight for the PBC and saw all he needed to see.

****ysis Jacobs: Theres few boxers that were as highly touted and as decorated as amateurs then Danny Jacobs was before he turned Pro. Jacobs can do it all.. like fighters such as ward, mayweather, canelo, he typifies that boxing is a sport about inches and timing when you have elite skills. Everything refined, everything precise. He can fight on the back foot, coming forward, he can brawl, he can box on the outside, hes got good fast combinations, hes underrated on the inside. he is highly intelligent and has great counter punching abilities. hes got really good speed and very solid power. But that one thing... that makes this fight even.. He's got what *Appears* to be a skilled crafty professional Defense but surprisingly theres some awful habits mixed in. If you throw a straight right hand at him, sometimes Jacobs He has a tendency to just lean straight back with his hands down to avoid it. And i don't mean like Floyd Mayweather where theres an overhand right counterpunch right after. Theres nothing, no pivot, just completely leaning back hands down, out of position to punch, out of position to do anything, its unbelievable really. His left hand is really easily feinted out of position, because he tried to use it to block and then sometimes drops both hands. The wierd thing is he can have a tight responsible defense and elite defense, he showed it briefly in r2 vs Mora. The other big thing Jacobs does? He habitually postures and takes a picture after throwing the right hand especially after combination! Just stays right there like he accomplished something. Other fighters do this like Cotto, but Jacobs has better skills then Cotto in most other areas so its just hard to understand how these basic nono's exist for someone whos rest of thier skills are at the absolute top in comparison. The Truax's of the world should not be able to tag you Danny!! His chin is not as questionable as people think IMO but its not granite either. Back to the good....Theres few polished boxers better then Danny Jacobs, who can also punch probably as hard as Quillin, in the game today. He likes to start slow, then use all his skills to systematically destroy you, which happens to be the exact style Quillin's flaws are ripe to be exposed against. But his defensive flaws are all ripe for Quillin to expose as well!!

The most frustrating thing is that these are all basic things easily correctable in the gym for Jacobs!!!!!!!!

The difference is Quillin has skillsets he has to actually learn and master, whereas Jacobs has them all mastered but he has a few awful habits mastered too, thats why Jacobs is the most frustrating fighter in boxing.

Notable fights: He has not reached his career potential yet Due to his inactivity a few years ago from his struggle overoming cancer. I think that how he came back from everything, this alone demonstrates he posseses the true heart of a champion, and is not something we need to question in the ring. The other reason he didnt reach it, and this will be an unpopular opinion, but its because of and a bad.. YES BAD... ref stoppage vs. pirog, where many people have the misconception he was knocked out cold for 5 seconds. If you watch carefully, he was not out cold at all. He was caught with a great punch that knocked him down and he was using the time alloted to him to recooping as many experienced boxers do after getting caught. The flailing arms and relaxed body looks like he's out which is what the ref went off of, but you can clearly see in the a as soon as he called it Jacobs was outraged and in the alternate replay angles you can clearly see, his eyes never rolled back even briefly, ever which means he was never out, just caught flush. He was doing what most experienced boxers do.. laying there mentally recoop until the count of 6-7 then get to your knees, then you stand up at the count of 8-9. But the ref instead of giving him the full 10 count thought he was blacked out and just stopped the fight at the count of 3, the ref should have done a better job of making sure Jacobs was actually KOed. Jacobs was going to get up and in my opinion though he had a tough night and opponent he was going to outpoint Pirog or TKO him late. Versus Truax he showed a lot of his brilliant skills, but he always displayed all the defensive holes mentioned. Its unbelievable that his trainer has just turned a blind eye and its for those reasons his chin is going to be vunerable to Quillens power shots. In his last fight vs Mora he was on his way to a standard TKO before he got the leg TKO, but again the posturing with hands down led to an outclassed oponent catching him w a flash KD against him before Jacobs got the TKO. Quillin has better skills and power then Mora, Jacobs is too smart to make that mistake vs him. But i think those habits are going unaddressed means they will still be present during the Quillen fight.

Prediction: I think Jacobs will get knocked down multiple times in this fight, but that he will tighten his D up, keep his hands responsible and reduce the opportunities for Quillen to catch him in these holes, and then he will scientifically dismantle Quillen piece by piece. Jacobs TKO 8

I think Quillin comes out aggressively drops Jacobs, and he stays down, because he'll be unconscious. Quillin KO2.

I think Jacobs pressures Quillin and makes him fight like he did Dmitry Pirog, except that I don't see Peter having the work rate of Dmitry. In fact I miss Pirog, for an E.E. fighter he had style in the ring .

Jacobs stays close and he gets KO. If he is patient he can squeeze out a SD or MD.

Against Pirog noone really knew much about him, and against Mora he wasn't really worried about power. I expect to see a defensively responsible Danny Jacobs as much as hes capable in this fight

There was a fair bit of footage of Pirog out there prior to the Jacobs bout, if they didn't know much about him then his team need sacking for being ****ing useless!

I believe that they thought that Dmitry was a stiff fighter until he showed them that he his very good technical defense. By the 3rd round Jacobs was getting caught flush a lot and missing shots.
    Out slicked the slickster.

I miss Pirog too! Damn shame about that injury - guy had real skill and a unusual style that was kinda slick but aggressive too.

I think the TS has compiled a thoughtful and thorough breakdown with which I essentially agree, Jacobs the more skilled boxer, Quillin solid and possibly more athletically gifted, but both with serious defensive flaws. There are a coupla of points I'd like to add though, although they don't really affect the conclusions drawn.

I think the TS kinda underplays the Pirog loss - maybe Danny could have continued, but I think he was pretty much gone for a few seconds, not just 'taking a breather' ... on his back, with his eyes shut..... Regardless, I like to think Jacobs has matured and improved since then anyway and besides Pirog would present a pretty tricky puzzle to anyone.

And also noticed the TS completely neglects to mention one of the most telling fights Quillin has been engaged in (at least IMO) - the N'Dam victory. Quillin essentially lost almost every round he didn't knock NDNJ down in, and was comprehensively outboxed for much of the fight. Now IMO N'Dam is an excellent boxer and were it not for his lamentable inability to stay on his feet I would have him as one of the top guys in the division, but he did show that Quillin is susceptible to movement as well as pressure (a la Rosado). Jacobs isn't as mobile as N'Dam but he may posses a similar level of skill and could certainly draw upon the N'Dam fight in formulating a gameplan.

Jacobs got rocked definitley. Still far different then being knocked clean out. Also Pirog was giving him problems more then he expected, and had nice talent/coordination, nonetheless i had jacobs still winning those first couple rounds as he was getting the better combos off, and Pirog was getting caught himself.

The N'dam ****ysis is spot on..

Some good posts on this thread. Good thread.

I though the same in regards to the Jacobs KO via Pirog. He jumped up, but I can't fault the ref for drawing the conclusion he did. It certainly looked like Jacobs was done for.

Good breakdowns on Quillin and Jacobs. I'm calling Jacobs via UD, but this is really a 50/50 fight as I see it.

    I think Jacobs

me too and I was going to bet the bankroll on Jacobs until i brushed up on all the unexplainable/unforgivable defensive holes in his otherwise elite boxing skills. But Vegas got it right its a tossup because of that

Ive looked at odds on the bookies i use and was surprised to see Quilln a favourite i thought it would be a dead split.

I think Jacobs will win a close fight while it lasts.

Excellent well considered ****ysis. I expect a really good fight. Quillin's problem is that he started boxing late, and like most guys in the position (Nate Campbell, Ken Norton, Ron Lyle, etc.) he just doesn't flow on offense or defense. He is constantly thinking (not in a good way) and the muscle memory never takes over. He is the quintessential "better athlete than boxer."

Jacobs has skills but something is missing. I get the strong feeling either one of two things is happening with him:

1- He hasn't hit is prime yet, or,

2- The illness to something out of him that he will never get back.

I think Jacobs is the better fighter though, and I think he wins a UD.

N'Dam was dropped by a sharp short left hook 6 times.:deal

Korobov dropped Jacobs with a left hook.
Mora dropped him with a left hook.

    I'm seeing a pattern here.:deal

Of course Pirog KO'd Jacobs with a short lunging overhand right.

Similar to the one Quillin almost KO'd Lee with.

    Jacobs is f***ed.:deal
