I totally would. In fact, I saw his fight with Jimmy Dupree. What a tough era of light heavys. I would also add in Mike Quarry, Pierre Fourie and Bobby Cassidy. But the emergence of Jorge Ahumada, Victor Galindez, Yaqui Lopez and John Conteh would soon overshadow them. Damn, the '70s was tough.
Also, Eddie " red top " Owens, Len Hucthins, Eddie " boss man " Jones Avenama Peralter. Did you know that Jones was the sparring partner that was responsible for the cut Foreman received, that caused the fight in Zaire to be cancelled for 6 weeks or so, tough dude.
Mike, Bossman Jones was one tough light heavy and did serve as a sparring partner to Foreman. However, not to be a wiseguy or anything, but it was actually Bill McMurray who caused the cut. Still, I love the inclusion of Bossman Jones in that era as well as the others you mentioned.
Ah, I now remember Roberto Duran being lifted off the stool by his handlers at the start of each round just to take that little bit of pressure off his legs that they figured might give him a tad bit of juice in reserve as the fight went on.
The Floyd Patterson leaping left hook, the Jersey Joe Walcott “Cakewalk” and one in particular of an obscure fighter whose name I no longer recall. Years ago in boxing news, Ron olver wrote a series called the professionals. Many of his pieces were of obscure British pros from the 40’s and 50’s who were not world class but good pros nonetheless whose hopes were to fight for the British title as their ultimate goal. Anyways, Olver wrote very descriptive pieces and one fighter he wrote about was known for shuffling forward scuffing the soles of his boots along the canvas as he moved forward. He wrote that the sound at ringside was always evident of who was in the ring. That piece always stuck in my head and a tribute to a writer who quite clearly loved his work and subject matter. Now, I wish I could remember the fighter. Lol!
Orlando Canizales liked to stroke his moustache and shake his head in the Vasquez fight. Can't recall him doing it in others, but it was pretty funny in this one.
I stand corrected ! dont know about you Scartissue, or any of the regular posters, all the guys whose opinions and thoughts I find interesting and informative ( there are exceptions ) but I tend to go with what I remember from all those years ago . and not Google the imfo, of course their will be mistakes ( above ) that,s the nature of the beast, I prefer it my way, gives a genuine and honest feel to the comments and opinions, dont,t you think ?
I totally agree. I’d rather talk to a person than an encyclopedia. A fight fan can give you a feel of every nuance he experienced.
Not a fighter, but Mills Lane always did the ‘sting’ signal with the finger to the nose before every fight.
