Quitting

Corners and refs need to do a better job of saving fighters from themselves in fights like those.

 

a true champion would rather die than quit????? I mean, that's just retarted, really I wish all those who died of injuries from fights were quiters, damn! its just a boxing match, its not a war! if he dies from injuries, he loses the ability to come back at a later date and show YOU his true champion spirit win or lose

 

In the old days bare knuckle days a fighter would say “give best” when he had enough. People accepted it. Those fights were to the finish. So far as I know, there was no shame in it back then. Obviously giving “best” is the operative word here. If a man has given his best that’s enough.

Back then prize fights were between two men who wanted to win or had to win.

Under those circumstances I don’t think there should be shame in it now. Boxing is a sport of levels, one level too high and one guy Is going to get hurt. It’s guaranteed. Why should there be pride in taking a beating already knowing full well that you are beat?

People have always known when they are beat. But it is humiliating to admit it. So an injury of some kind can be used, and since it is a harmful sport, often there are any number of injuries to use.

I prefer a corner pulling a guy out on his stool and making the decision for him. That is more dignified than a fighter turning away or rolling around on the floor. A corner should know when their man Is beat and they should pull the plug not the fighter.

Really it is a question of being outmatched. No outmatched fighter should be expected to take a beating.

There are rare occasions where in major fights it has been the overwhelming impression that a man has quit having not “given best”. Whilst I think that is his prerogative to do this, in that case he cannot expect it not to be counted against him.

 

Some fighters have quit and weren't branded with that label, Chavez quit against Oscar because he knew what was coming, he also quit in the second Randall fight because he was going to be ko'ed in the next couple of rounds. Arguello stayed down against Pryor in the second fight much the way DeJesus stayed down against Duran in one of they're fights. In these instances after you've done what you can only a beating is left
