Something like that apparently. Gruesome stuff. People need to remember that although it's not a conventional job, it is the livelihood for top fighters. Boxing isn't 'war' just as football against the Germans isn't 'war', despite the spin put on it over the last few decades. It's a game, with rules, a sport. People don't need to die, or permanently injure themselves for our entertainment. My 2p worth.
I haven't seen the scans or examined his eye so I can't comment on that. Most professionals and most fans saw him quit. His corner and referee are not at fault.
That is a bad injury and you don't know if someone will be the same afterwards. We saw what happened with Brook.
Joyce has a inferior looking jab, but it took him less effort to throw it..and it was always in Dan’s face. You can’t afford to absorb that many connections at super heavyweight. A terrible quality blow is still effective. Dubois Panicked trying to win “front foot positioning” which gassed him. As a result, All his punches took too much effort. Each superior flurry Dubois landed with, Joyce would survive then immediately take the play away with his constant jabbing. Debois didn’t ever realise he could win on the back foot, or work off what Joyce was doing. He’s an out and out front footer. Joyce is like George Foreman. He can hurt when there is nothing on the punch. Debois head was rocking back off tiny jabs. He was taking too many per round too. That eye came up because he blew his nose. Couldn’t breath after that...So lots of inexperience. Must have been galling knowing that he was the more talented fighter. Still, it was a valuable defeat. When you watch it back... Dubois took a lot of stick. He had enough after round 6 when he couldn’t put Joyce away only to eat more jabs.
Of course I'm not disputing him quitting could have preserved his health but thats not the point I was making. Dubois failed his first real gut check, his post fight interview spoke volumes. These guys are fighters and go through hell to just get in the ring but if you have it in you to quit then it's extremely difficult to come back from that. Hopefully he does and comes back stronger.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/55122753 His eye was pretty much closed, he was saying he couldn’t see out of it. There’s a part of me that thinks he should have kept going, and that he failed the gut check but my original point is that the corners and referee have a duty to protect the fighter. He shouldn’t have had to made that decision. Just as an aside, David Price gets a lot of stick for various things on here (mostly deserved) but he never ever gets pulled up for quitting. I’ve never once heard anyone refer to him failing the gut check like Joshua and now Dubois is taking. He bottled it against Kuzmin, pulling out with a torn bicep in round 4. Never gets called a quitter.
Has Frampton ever had a broken eye socket and nerve damage in his eye? I said it last night in the threads, eye injuries are a different level. You don't **** around with eye injuries. If there's something wrong, you stop immediately IN ANY sport. Look at Ogogo as a prime example.
That Price quit job was the worst one I've seen because he was in the fight and Kuzmin was toiling. If you watch it again Kuzmin was elated after the fight which is the clearest indicator that he was struggling big time. Mind you I didn't complain because I had a lot of money that night on Kuzmin by stoppage.
It was poor from Price. In fact, he’s actually arguably quit a few times almost folding like a deckchair. I never hear anything about his gut, only that he’s got hamster lungs and a glass jaw. There’s so many examples but Dubois takes a knee over a broken eye socket and only being able to see through one eye and he’s a quitter. Liam Williams quit against Liam Smith yet I never hear him labelled a quitter but he’s talked up as a potential world champion. Which means that you can knuckle down and change people’s perception. I’m sure Dubois will do the same.
That's a good point especially about Liam Williams who most boxing fans rightly perceive as being an animalistic type of fighter despite the manner of his loss to Smith. The bottom line is that if most of us suffered a broken eye socket even while sitting on our arses watching football or in the office at work we would immediately go to the hospital yet a lot of these people are slating a 23 year old suffering from a broken eye socket and nerve damage against a 6'6", 250lb giant to continue fighting. We acknowledge that there are some boxers truly wired differently who would never quit despite any type of injury but eye injuries are up there with the absolute most serious type of injury anyone can suffer in a sport because it's a legit career ender.
Why would a lard arse sat on their sofa be compared with a man who has aspriations of being a world heavyweight champion? Don't think it is outlandish to expect different sorts of reactions in adversity. Time will tell whether Dubois has the minerals to achieve his goal. As worrying as him taking the knee, was the stuff they were having to say to him inbetween rounds, which hints that the mental side of his game is way short of what is required.
Price doesn't get pulled up for quitting because he isn't very good, so nobody expects champion qualites from him. Dubois was being talked up as the next generations heavyweight star. It's almost a compliment being called a quitter in boxing, as it shows that people expect more from you. Whereas if you are rubbish and quit, you just get called ****!
