Likewise, a good number of boxing fans are less than thrilled with the selection of Clottey for Pacquiao. In Joshuas last fight he dropped a close split-decision to Miguel Cotto. In winning the fight, Cotto earned the right to take on Pacquiao but was subsequently annihilated for his troubles last fall. Surely then, Clottey has no shot at victory and The Event will serve as little more than Cowboys Stadium introduction to boxing right? The Rugged Man doesnt think so. Clottey is a big, strong, real Welterweight who is capable of giving any true welterweight problems. I don't see anybody walking through him, and he's never been dominated or lost a fight convincingly. If Manny could walk through him that would be pretty incredible and it would make Manny even more special in my eyes. Any fighter willing to fight Cotto and Clottey back to back gets my respect. In fact, I can't name a fighter on Mayweathers entire record that would've been able to beat a Josh Clottey or a Miguel Cotto. Not Corrales, not De La Hoya and not Marquez.
RA is an idiot. First off, most of Mayweather's career was fought at 130 lbs. Second, De La Hoya would definately beat Clottey. He's fighting Mosley next, he would beat Clottey. Baldo did beat Clottey(albeit it was via DQ). Clottey's biggest win was against a washed up Judah, he barely beat Gutierrez for crying out loud. Clottey is a good fighter, but he's being hyped up as an elite fighter based on two losses.
he's spot on about almost everything. How anyone can get hated on for fighting Cotto and Clottey at WW back to back is unbelievable. Also, noone has ever dominated Clottey, even though he did lose the Margarito fight convincingly. And he's right that Clottey would have beaten all of Mayweather's opponents but many of them due to his size, while Floyd often fought then at their natural weight. Castillo would have beaten Clottey if they were the same size. That's about it. He probably would have lost another one along the way because of his inconsistancy, like he lost to Baldomir by DQ
According to RA's logic, he should also point out that no one on Pac's resume would beat Clottey with the exception of Cotto(who did so in controversial fashion). So what are we supposed to conclude, that Clottey is Manny's 2nd best opponent?
I mean in absolute terms, probably. But in a p4p sense, obviously he's far from 2nd best. You could make a case that Clottey would be PBF's 2 or 3rd best opponent even in a p4p sense though. (not in terms of consensus p4p ranking, but in terms of who is actually better than who). People will say Corrales was obviously better but I never really rated Corrales. Clottey is almost as good as he was. Clottey > Hatton at 147 and better p4p than Oscar was at 154 at that point in his career. Better than Judah @ 147 and Baldomir too despite losing by DQ. Hernandez was a good champ but Clottey is a better fighter than he was too IMO. Castillo is the only really clear one. Mosley is another one but Floyd hasn't fought him yet.
Get ****in real. Your assessment of this guy is a joke. He has won one paper title in his entire career and his best win was a washed up Judah. In a p4p sense, he would not be Myweather's 2nd or 3rd best opponent. You never rated Corrales but you rate Clottey? One of the best ways to get overhyped these days is to simply fight a popular fighter. Look what it did for Kessler's rep?
I still consider Corrales better than Clottey. I don't really rate Clottey as much as you think, but he's still pretty good. Apart from Castillo and Corrales, I don't see who there would be that was better than Clottey when Mayweather fought them.
I can't believe the level of hate and/or swinging that we have encountered on this board. First of all, who the heck is RA the Rugged Man!? I have never heard of this guy (before the Floyd interview) and how did he somehow become a voice in boxing? This isn't someone worthwhile like Bert Sugar giving his opinion. This is some jerk off. However because it serves a ******* agenda, we are all suddenly supposed to give a crap? Give me a break. PH|LLA, you are a clown. You don't rate Corrales!? I bet if Pac fought him you would rate him. 2nd or 3rd best opponent!? What are you, new? I guess that Genaro Hernandez, a 2-time world champion whose only losses are to Floyd and DLH is second in your mind to a guy with a paper championship who hasn't had a KO since 2004. You guys amaze me. This content is protected
If Pacquiao darts in and out, popping Clottey all night, piling up enough points to win, but not doing any significant damage (as PBF did with JMM), then this win for Pac won't be as impressive as his Cotto win. But if he beats Clottey down, knocks him out, or forces the fight to be stopped....then yeah, it'll be way more impressive than what he did against Cotto, because Clottey is bigger, stronger, and has better defense than Cotto.
Hatton beat Collazo. Collazo is better than anyone Clottey has beaten. I sincerely do not get the Clottey hype. He is completely defined by the fact that he's "looked good losing" against fighters that went on to get utterly destroyed a few (or in Cottos case, one) fight later. He'd be about fifth or sixth on Floyd's resume.
If you'd watched the Clottey vs Judah fight, you'd know that was a TKO that was incorrectly ruled a TD. Genaro Hernandez a two-time champion who won his titles against who exactly? His best performance is what? A SD over a 40 year old Azumah Nelson? Clottey is better than Genaro Hernandez was I'm not hating just telling it like it is. Just cause I don't rate Floyd as high as you do doesn't mean I hate him I just think he's overhyped. And btw I rate Corrales higher than Clottey and guess which one Pacquiao is fighting? You say you bet that I'd rate Corrales if Pac fought him but that's a bet that you would lose. Like I said I'm not hating just telling it like it is.
This RA guy is making a name off Floyd rather than his music career it seems. Seriously, when asked about RA, a lot of people are saying, "Oh, you mean that one guy who punked Floyd on a radio show?," as opposed to something like, "Yeah! RA! The sickest emcee out there." A prime Corrales would've given today's Cotto trouble. To me that's a bit of a toss up but I'll give the edge to Cotto. A prime DLH would've crushed today's Cotto and easily outbox Clottey. And notice how RA gives no credit to Floyd for completely destroying Marquez (he didn't even win one round) - a guy who nearly beat Pac on both occasions. Completely biased statement! Can't believe people take Pac's win over DLH as if Oscar was still at the top of his game. Hell, today's version of Ali has a size advantage over me but that doesn't mean he can beat me in a fight.
RA is bias here. He is bigging up the Brooklyn fighter here. Clottey is good. But not Pacquiao/Mayweather/Mosley good.
