RFor 2 years trained at the Butchers with Him, Im gutted to here the sad news condolences to His Family. He was a wonderfull Man, a Gem. Great to have known Him, pleased He passed my way.
R.I.P Alan One of our great boxers, wish he fought in this era. They say sometimes the good guy never gets what he deserves and Alan is one of them guys.
I think i may stop in The Vines on the way home tomorrow and have a toast to the great man. Very sad news. R.I.P.
Great post. Very nearly fought a faded Pascual Perez, who IMO is the greatest Fly (looks unbelievable on film too) but it sadly never materialised, though the poster still exists!!! AlFrancis had it as his avy not long back.
Olivares best win. Just destructive that he could take a guy like Rudkin out like that. That is why Olivares is a fighting machine! Rudkin was such a wonderful stylist but could turn it on when need be. A massive influence to my own boxing. All Rudkin needed to do was fight Jofre and he would have fought, arguably, the number 1,2 and 3 Bantams ever.
People talk glibbly about fighters going life and death in the ring when what they really mean is that a fight was close and hard...Rudkin did go life and death in the truest sense of the word, throwing everything into his performances...his last fight against Johnny Clark is hard to watch at times but an absolute modern classic and a fitting end to Alans career. Do yourself a favour and at the very least try to get hold of McGowan - Rudkin II, and Clark - Rudkin II...you won't regret it.
A classy pro, who built up his career the proper way. In his pomp it took the very best a then amazing Bantamweight division had to offer and (seemingly) hometown robberies to beat him. In this era of more TV coverage, I suspect he would had even more plaudits.
R.I.P. I had been reading about him not so long ago. Great career and a top bloke. Rudkin would have been a top world champion if he were fighting now.
