Terrible news. Greatest ref I ever saw. Only blew one call in 50 years of watching him and that was when he neglected to rule at least one and maybe 2 KDs of Chuvalo in the Bonavena fight. This sport could use an army of Mercantes and would be better off for it.

I read his book it was a great read. he came across as a good sport who lived by a set of rules and expected high standards. his uncle boxed max schmeling. there was some good storys about many characters, I recomend it. arthur was not fond of howard cossel who stole his observations during a fight comentry turning mercante's mic down so the audience thought howard came up with them on his own.

It's tough when people you know pass away, but he lived to be 90, so he had a good run, hopefully he lived his life with few regrets, that's about the best we can all do.

Knew this day would eventually come, but it's always sad to see a class guy and boxing cornerstone go.

    RIP Arthur Mercante.
