I just heard word that Former WBC light welterweight champ and Kingston, NY native, Billy Costello, passed away. He was only 55. [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Costello"]Billy Costello[/ame], a Kingston resident and a former World Boxing Council junior welterweight champion, died on Wednesday morning at Benedictine Hospital at the age of 55.Costello had been fighting lung cancer since April 2010. "Billy took it like a champ, right from the beginning," said friend and former trainer Lou Fusco. "He never gave up. He never complained." As a professional, Costello won 40 of his 42 fights, with many of them coming in front of sell-out crowds at Kingston's Midtown Neighborhood Center. Our thoughts and prayers goes out to his family and loved ones. Henry This content is protected
damn someone said he was ill but in a interview he looked in good nick. but lung cancer. thats terrible. all the best towards his family.
Horrible. The news about this illness broke over a year ago. He seems to have put up a good fight to last as long as he did. Apparently, his was the particular strain of lung cancer which most frequently kills nonsmokers. I've taken timed release 81 mg aspirin for years as a preventative measure against things like this. RIP, and Godspeed. I enjoyed your matches against Curry, Mamby, Smith and Arguello. You became a champion, and went out a winner.
I read the Black Lights ,Billy came across as a good genuine guy, he was a solid champ ,and an honest fighter . R. I. P. Billy
Bad news indeed. I remember looking through the old TV Guide magazines as a youngster for whatever fights might be aired that weekend, and Costello was always a staple in 1984/85 on CBS. Lots of memories there.
**** me raw.... Celebs are dropping like flies right now....... This cancer **** has me spooked....... BUT! Good news, my doc said I'm lined-up for a heart attack or massive stroke...... That freaks me too, but at least its a quick way out..... Cheers...... MR.BILL
In Bill's honor (apparently he didn't like being called "Billy").........good fight, if you haven't seen it. His first title defense against the now well-known trainer Ronnie Shields. You've been pushing that aspirin thing. Given you're spot on regarding your boxing insight, think I'll take up the habit myself. Black Lights was a really cool book and showed a bit of what a great and deserving guy Costello was. The kind of guy who makes the sport great.
