RIP Burt. Condolences to his family. He was a wonderful poster, a great man and a knowledgeable poster.
Loved his posts, missed him the last 8 years. He was the only poster I knew of who saw Saddler vs Pep 2.
We jousted, we sparred but we agreed to love the sport. The golden era is long gone, and now one of our last windows into that era is gone, too. RIP, Burt.
The fact we ever had him at all here, at the age he somehow learned typing and began posting online is incredible though, and many of us instantly realized that as soon as he joined this site. And the fact he and John Garfield were actually posting together for a few years of overlap is golden for those of us who were fortunate to participate with them. Joe Rein's death came as a complete surprise to most of us (Manny Pacquiao did know and classily reached out to JG), and Burt was particularly dismayed that it happened to a poster so much younger than himself sharing the same great memories. We lost an awful lot of prominent and excellent posters before Burt chose the terms of his own sign-off, and he had kind words whenever he was aware of these losses. We were exchanging posts with a guy who shook Jack Johnson's hand and was at MSG for the FOTC! How cool was that?
This is sad. I had the brief pleasure of debating with him. Incredible knowledge. Incredible analogies. I don’t think I ever saw him lose his temper and insult anybody. A gentleman. I used to love reading his content. Burt and John Garfield were my favourite posters. I could read their threads/posts for hours on end. A huge miss to the forum.
Well, there was at one point a Burt denialist on this board, saying his presence was pure fabrication. If if I ever get so bored I'll have to dig up those threads. Who now is our window into the most distant past? @mcvey is up there but not sure how many of the fights he went to back in the day.
Bukkake, thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed Mr. Bienstock's contibutions to the board. Aside from his keen interest in boxing, he had a great love of music.
I'll say this about Burt, no other poster has been able to paint a picture in my mind of a fantasy fight then Burt did with Dempsey vs Mayweather. And i loved his retelling of the Williams vs Jack fight. What a legend. RIP
It was, as might be expected, the music of his own generation. When I posted the aforementioned YouTube footage of Fitzpatrick-Kahut, it was accompanied by the instrumental and often intricate jazz soundtrack of his generation, which he remarked on as liking very much. (I played clarinet as a kid, which he positively responded to via PM.) Keep in mind that Burt was among NYC's definitive members of the Greatest Generation. Periodically, I'd look for his obit online, but not recently with recent personal distractions. I just found a couple of brief mentions. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/hewlett-ny/burton-bienstock-12082212 I just added a fourth candle to the three already there. LIGHT EM UP BOYS! Let's see how many candles we can add for Burt! A very nice shot of him is on his Facebook page. https://scontent-ord5-3.xx.fbcdn.ne...nRL0Kp4UwXA-QGnHp5DsU62bvuMZOLMiQ&oe=679CB43B
RIP Mr Bienstock. I interacted with Burt a bit back in the day and always enjoyed his views, insights and humour. I always took the time to read any posts from Burt, Djanders and John Garfield as they offered a living time capsule to a bygone age not just in boxing but in the world in general (I’ve always had a suspicion that they were in front of the rest of us and that we missed out on better times). Farewell Burt and rest easy my friend.
