This guy epitomised heart on the sleeve work ethic never back down boxing. There are not many boxers with a more apt ring name. What a fighter. I only watched his fights retrospectively but will always insist his fight with Holyfield MADE Evander the fighter he became. No Qawi, no Real Deal. A fighter who took a piece of your soul but gave you more of his. RIP. I am genuinely upset by this news.

He beat my favorite fighter Matthew Saad Muhammad twice. He had superb offense and defense and was able to out jab taller opponents. In his prime he was almost impossible to hit cleanly with a right cross. Thus huge right hand punchers Saad and Spinks were unable to seriously hurt him, though each stunned him a bit. Spinks had to fight a brilliant strategic fight to beat him. The war with Holyfield was a classic. The only negative I can point to is that he seemed to lose some fire and conditioning after the Spinks fight. He was still able to move up to Cruiserweight and win a title but was definately a better overall fighter in his 175 lb. prime.
