R.I.P. Ellsworth "Spider" Webb, 1950s and early 1960s Middleweight Contender

According to Dan Cuoco of the International Boxing Research Organization, Ellsworth "Spider" Webb, a 1950s and early 1960s middleweight contender, passed away in Tulsa, Oklahoma on November 23, 2017. Among the noted fighters he beat were Dick Tiger, Joey Giardello, Terry Downes, Holly Mims, Rory Calhoun, Willie Vaughn, Bobby Boyd. Charley Joseph and Randy Sandy. He lost twice to Gene Fullmer by decision, the second time with Fullmer's world middleweight title at stake. While making an ill-advised comeback in his last pro bout, Webb was stopped by Dick Tiger for the only time during his pro career.

Webb was on the boxing teams at Compton Junior College (located in Compton, California) and Idaho State University. While attending Idaho State University, he was the N.C.A.A. middleweight champion during 1951 and 1962. In addition, Webb was on the American boxing team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic.
