I just received this from John DiSanto: All, George Benton died this morning, September 19, 2011 at 3:40 AM, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in North Philly. He had been in the hospital the past few weeks battling pneumonia, although I am not certain of the official cause of death. No funeral arrangements have been made yet, but I will keep you posted once I hear. Benton was a great fighter, trainer, and one of the true legends of Philadelphia boxing. He will be greatly missed. Below is a link to my obituary of Benton, which was run on PhillyBoxngHistory.com this morning. http://www.phillyboxinghistory.com/fight_stories/stories/2011/20110919_benton_passes_01.htm Thank you, John DiSanto Philly Boxing History (.com) 609-377-6413 This content is protected
A great boxing mind and fighter was Georgie Benton. He reminded me of a later edition of Charley Burley. R.I.P. champ...
Few ever contributed to boxing as much as George Benton. It is a sad day for every boxing fan, but he lived a full life. May he rest in peace. I love George Benton. His voice in the corner during Holyfield-Dokes used to ring in my head when I fought fat guys: "Now... listen.... Holyfield.... go to da baw-day. Go to da baw-dayy." With that last one said in a low, guttural growl.
Whenever I think of one of those guys who was a milestone in the evolution of the slick defensive fighter, he's there. Rest in Peace.
Buddy McGirt once said that fighting Pernell Whitaker was like fighting his trainer, "Georgie Benton". Buddy knew how great Benton was as a fighter and trainer and saw clearly the effect he had on the boxers he worked with. As for me, I can think of few who were more naturally gifted. He is an absolute pleasure to watch in those fight films, one of my favorites. Thanks for all you gave us George! :good
