It saddened me to learn that Hall of Fame boxing trainer and commentator, Gil Clancy, passed away this morning. Gil worked with Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Jerry Quarry as well as Gerry Cooney in his bout with Foreman. He was the first and only trainer of Emile Griffith, and led him to win both the welterweight and middleweight championships of the world. He was a class act and an asset to the great sport of boxing. He will surely be missed. May he rest in peace. Henry
So sorry to hear that Gil Clancy died today. Clancy was a great trainer, and more important a gentleman. R.I.P.
all time great trainer, may he rest in peace didnt know about this. got to remember it's not a tradgedy, he lived a full, interesting and noteworthy life. well done to him. he will be missed. his commentary is under appreciated.
RIP Gil. Great trainer obviously. But I'll best remember him as part of my all-time favorite boxing announcing team. Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy on CBS Saturdays and Sundays. Didn't get any better than that for me.
Clancy was one of my all-time favorite boxing people. Great manager/trainer, and what a commentator! He was perfect for the sport, a gentleman, a legend, and an all-around nice guy who did much to help troubled youth in his great life. May he Rest In Peace. Boxing lost another great one today.
R.I.P. Gil had his opinions and wasn't shy about them, but I like that he wasn't stubborn about them, and would sometimes have a bit of fun at his own expense relating how he told Big George to stay retired.
Just the other day I was watching a fight with his commentary on it. I always liked Gil's commentary, always insightful. RIP Gil.
