R.I.P. Johnny Famechon

His fight with Jose Legra was something else. Harada 2 is one of my favourites. Rest In Peace legend, the hard parts over bless his family. Us Aussies have lost a great, great boxer.

He was the man, I have lost out on an important quest of mine. I was meant to track him down, I desperately wanted to shake his hand and buy him a drink.

 

A beautiful boxer. I could watch him all day. A fantastic defense, superb footwork and tougher than many think. Never stopped in over 60 fights is an impressive effort. That’s with no amateur career.
I knew a bloke who was Johnny’s carer after his accident and he told me he was a gem of a human being as well. Nice and humble but with that innate determination to overcome his injuries to make a recovery.

RIP Johnny you legend.

 

Same feelings for me as well, a name from my youth that inevitably takes me back there, was seen as a beautiful boxer, with great skill levels, but as previous ( and with a lot of defensive fighters ) he was a tough dude, especially when you look at who he shared a ring with.

Great defensive fighter and an all round great boxer in general.

Overcame adversity and struggle outside the ring after being hit by a car in ‘91, in a coma for 10 days, an accident that left him with permanent brain injury and a stroke following thereafter. A very positive, nice guy.

I had a few great connections for Johnny and spoke to him over the phone but never met him. He’s been in a care home for the last few years and it made it tough for people to visit due to Covid but his wife was always there. My mate was supposed to see him recently but got injured, then got sick, and was planning to go see him this week or next.

I did get three signed items signed by him - his two books and the on-site poster from the first Harada fight (also signed by Harada). Everyone says what a great guy Fammo was. Always happy.

Anyone who beat Fighting Harada gets my respect.

Johnny did it twice. The first decision was disputed in some quarters so he rematched and won by KO.

Fine carer. Revered in Australia and rightfully so.

RIP champ.

 

Really sad news, he was a fighter of great ability imo if not overall career due to his early retirement, one of the best pure boxing technicians in the division's history. Smart as a fox too and teak tough with underrated power when he opted to set his feet and let both hands go and not fall into a retreating pattern too much.

He gets compared to Pep quite a bit but I always though he had more in common with the likes of Mayweather and Locche with his left arm cradled low at that right angle and the right hand cocked slightly in front of his chin to pick off punches that were targeted over his jab when it was constantly flicking and pumping. He was sort of the apex result of Palmer's philosophy and training methods really.

His accident was especially cruel considering that he retired young and in good health with his faculties in tact despite likely having several good years left in him. Had he stuck around longer he be might have been champion again.

There was a great story on here about him and Harada stepping in to defend Rose from a bunch of racist drunks in London in the 70s at a charity event. I'd like to think that Rose and he are having a nice pint of Aussie ale together or maybe even fighting each other to finally settle who would've won.
