I believe this slipped past us. Caldwell if the type of guy that makes boxing what it is. He's a B side journeyman and what a journeyman he was, not for his victories but who he fought. He's also had some excellent interviews and particularly interesting is his comments on punchers as man did he fight some. Cleveland Williams, Ron Lyle, George Foreman, Joe Bugner, Earnie Shavers, Oscar Bonavena, Trevor Berbick, Pinklon Thomas, Gerrie Coetzee, John Tate and David Bey are among his better opponents and have a look at the bangers in that lot. Lets hear it for Leroy. https://tss.ib.tv/boxing/featured-b...ekeeper-a-contrite-farewell-to-leroy-caldwell This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
Thanks for alerting us JT. We talk about the Greats, but guys like Leroy were part of the fabric, very much great in their own way. Scrap Iron Johnson in the same realm. RIP Leroy.
Hi Buddy. Might we include in these ranks Larry Middleton amongst others : Bobick,LeDoux,Bonavena,Ellis,Lyle,O,Halloran,Quarry,Norton,Doyle,Bugner,McAlinden. stay safe hombre.
For sure Mike. Names indelibly burnt into our memories. The Greats couldn’t have been what they were without all those guys…
How did this get by us? I don't know. Sad to hear it. He seemed like a lovable guy and was probably the most experienced heavyweight of the 70's, in truth.
He had a strong reputation as a top notch sparring partner also. Similar to Bossman Jones & Stan Ward. Can sure think of some recent heavies that could use that kind of insight and tutoring
Fought and sparred a who's who of a couple of eras and yet still mentally sharp in old age and outlived many of his peers. Without people like him there'd be no one for the top fighters to fight or learn against. RIP.
