This part of life always hits hard, never gets easier. Mac was put together so well into the Quarry bout and he had such a hard, accurate jab against Jerry. Against this at his peak Foster I believe it was Jerry's finest victory. The Ali go was an unattractive bout with Muhammad out of shape and not sharp and Mac just not having it anymore. Ali looked so boringly bad that Angelo tried to get the ref to stop it claiming Mac was getting pummeled,,,but I may have been able to take Ali's punches that night. A few years back I was stunned when they found James Broad dead in a bus shelter, then both Finnegan brothers after the Quarry's,,,,we should never take a day for granted as tomorrow we may stand before our maker friends. Goodbye Mac.
Heard this today, very sad. RIP Mr. Foster. I had no idea about James Broad though, damn! Belated RIP for him as well.
The Quarry fight ruined his confidence but Mac was an impressive looking puncher. Are you sure the dates are right 6-17-70, I was ,just did not seem like 40yrs ago, I remember he was 24-0 with 24KO's I thought he would kill Jerry but back then it was records and size and muscles that impressed me. Today I know there is a lot of other elements that come into play.
Mac Foster indeed stopped the aging Sonny in a sparring in June 1968 while Sonny was preparing for a bout with Henry Clark. Two years later, Liston remembered that power and bet upwards of $10,000 on Foster to defeat Jerry Quarry. He lost.
A fun, exciting fighter of the golden era of the division. It is sad to here he died so relatively young.
Actually, Mac Foster was supposed to fight Sonny Liston in March 1970. If, Sonny had defeated Leotis Martin for the N.A.B.F. Title in December 1969, an ABC-TV fight was pre-scheduled for March at The International Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Mac Foster had been challenging Sonny Liston since the Summer of 1969. Mac really controlled the first 3-Rounds in his bout with Jery Quarry, in 1970, then came apart.
Mac openly stated, that he hated Muhammad Ali. Him and his Army buddies in Japan were disgusted with the way Muhammad Ali portrayed blacks in the military as non-thinking house boys.
Ali was in quite a few stinkers. The Foster match is a bit of a lost one, it seems to be one of Ali's "forgotten" fights, maybe his only one.
Mac Foster actually fought some good spirited rounds, but Ali's 3-Jabs and Grab pattern really pissed off the fight fans. Many rounds were very close, and it was like a 'lets nobody get hurt here theme'.
Mac Foster was the first and only fighter to stop Bepi Ros.... His victory over Bepi got Mac a bout with Muhammad Ali in 1972. Mac received an $80,000 purse to face Muhammad Ali in Tokyo. This content is protected
