According to Pete Rademacher he paid Cus D'Amato $250,000 for his title shot.

"I said I would guarantee Floyd $150,000 for a shot at the title and that we should hold the fight in Seattle because that was the only place in the Us that would allow it.
Cus said," "The ridicule will be big.Give me $250,000 and you got a deal, should Floyd beat Tommy Hurricane Jackson.I also want $100,000 in escrow that says that if you win we get first shot at your title"." So we signed a contract."

In his book "Victory over myselv" Floyd writes something like this: Boxing as also a question about money. Line up 10 amateurs and garantee me 250.000$ pr. fight and I will take them on all 10. (I only have the book in danish, so it is my translation)

jeez o pete (no pun intended) the Floyd-Pete scrap is so misconstrued.
Things were different in those days. Pete was the Gold Medelist in 56.
He was, what?, 215-220 lbs., 28 years old with, actually more experience than the 22 year old Floyd. When Pete caught an off-balance Floyd, Patterson had a bemused smile on his face when he got up. Two rounds later, Pete is down for maybe the fifth or sixth time and Patterson has his arm on the ropes bored as hell. IMO this fight is a ridiculous example of Patterson's "overratedness".
In retrospect, Pete's pro career wasn't so bad. Fought Folley in his second pro fight for god's sake. Didnt' he beat Chuvalo later and a couple of other contenders. If someone wants to trash Floyd's career based on this "exhibition" I suggest they go elsewhere....

At least Floyd and Cus put a price on selling the integrity of the heavyweight championship of the world.

And it kept him away from Liston a bit longer.

How you figure? Liston wasn't even ranked in RING top 10 in 1957. He was actually on parole and suspended from the sport at this time.

Jackson was the #1 contender, and Patterson just beat him. This was a goofy publicity exhibition held one month after that fight.

You're right mcvey, no one is, but many do, on other threads, 'trowel' out the Rademacher bout as some stupid example of Floyd's ineptness.
A career amateur at 28 yrs.of frigging age, what was Pete going to do at that point? His situation is non-existent nowadays. Need I say? Another example of different era comparisons.

Rademacher said in that article that, if he had beaten Floyd he would have retired.

And showed tremendous respect for the title … the revision of D'Amato as some sort of saint is hilarious .. he was an eccentric boxing guy … better than some and no better than others … like he would have jumped through such hoops for Tyson if he did not see the exceptional potential ? Pure fable stuff ..
