    Rafael ' Bazooka' Limon

Before December 7, 1975 - Rafael Limon was a little known
Mexican 130 lb. Super-Featherweight, with a 'spotty record'.

'Bazooka' a 5' 7" 'wicked body punching' southpaw, with a
tough as nails style, and a below the belt-line target for
    his whipping left hands.

In a 'Bull Ring' (Plaza de Toros Califia) in Baja California -
The Mexican Bomber scored a 10-Round 'upset' over the
#1 WBC Feathwerweight and former Champion 'Schoolboy'
    Bobby Chacon.

That 'loss' by Bobby, knocked him out of a title fight with
WBC Featherweight Champion - David 'Poison' Kotey.

The win, established Rafael 'Bazooka' Limon was a Top 10
130 lb. Super-Featherweight from that point on.

    Monday Night - April 9, 1979

Sports Arena - Los Angeles, California

It took 3+ years to get these 'two' back in the ring to fight each other.

Rafael 'Bazooka' Limon vs. 'Schoolboy' Bobby Chacon II

    NABF Super-Featherweight Championship

The 25 1/2 year-old Bazooka was the NABF Champion, and had a a record
    of 43-8-1 (32 KO's).

    The 27 1/2 year-old 'Schoolboy' was the #1 NABF ranked Super-Featherweight,
    and brought in a record of 41-4-0 (36 KO's).

The 'winner' was to get Alexis Arguello in July 1979 - for a shot at the WBC
    Super-Featherweight Championship.

The bout was called a 'Technical Draw 7' - after Rafael Limon sustained a cut-eye,
as a result of an 'accidental' head butt by Bobby Chacon.

Bobby was ahead on the scorecards at the end of the 6th Round, at the time of the
    'Technical Stoppage', { 60-56 / 59-56 / 59-56 }.

Some say, 'Bazooka' Limon was coming on real strong in Round 6, that 'Bazooka' would
have went on to win the bout. Others state, that Bobby looked real good through the
first 5-Rounds, and he would have went on for the victory.

    Thanks orriray59 -

Quite possibly, the best Rafael Limon vs Bobby Chacon bout, was the 'first bout'.

Sunday, December 7, 1975 - Plaza de Toros Califia (Bull Ring) in Mexicali

    'Unknown' Mexican - 21 1/2 year-old - Rafael 'Bazooka' Limon, a 5' 7" hard winging
southpaw with a 'spotty record' of 19-7-0 (16 KO's). The word was, he could punch,
    but could easily be out-boxed.

The 'Schoolboy' came in at 129 1/2 lbs. The former Champion at 24 years-old -
    brought in a 27-2-0 (25 KO's) record, and a #1 WBC Featherweight ranking.

It was supposed to be a tough 'tune-up' bout for the 'Schoolboy', but not one that
    they expected him to lose.

In the wings for early-1976, was a possible shot at WBC Featherweight Champion
David 'Poison' Kotey, or WBA Super-Featherweight Champion - Ben Villaflor.

most awkward fighter you'll ever see.

long winging hooks and uppercuts that seem to always be able to connect.

he didnt have the skills and technique but had the knowledge of the sport which to me goes WAY further. he knew what he was trying to do. it might look ugly as **** but in some form talented...just not in the ways we would associate

Warrior. Just an awkward slugger. A venomous bomber with an iron chin. Not the nicest chap either, at the time anyway. Love him.

    Rafael Limon

'I may not be the most stylist guy out there, but I know what is effective. I can
guarantee you one thing, I'm going to bust your ribs with my left hook underneath,
and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it.'

Of course it was a guaranteed war when he defended against Cornilus Boza-Edwards, and it didnt disappoint. in some rounds Boza actually showed his Boxing ability, and floored Limon with a beautiful Shot, But Rafael simply dusted himself off and resumed his quest for Trench warfare, Boza being Boza didnt want to be seen to pinch the title off the back foot, and was happy to try and Beat Rafael at his own game, Boza won, but both showed their mettle in this 15 round thriller.

Limon was a genuine badass but he had a tendancy to push the envelope too far with his trash talk.

In the build up to the Boza fight he referenced the recent Pintor-Owen tragedy and promised to do the same to Boza, since 'that's what happens when Mexican fight the British'.

Even worse, before his fourth fight with Chacon he taunted Bobby about the fact that Bobby's wife Valerie had shot herself and that she was in hell, which was where Limon was going to take him.

He also got up in Arguello's face and talked garbage about Arguello's family. From what I read in Ring Magazine Alexis kept his cool and laughed it off as he always did before getting in the ring and splitting Bazooka's head open.

    Very True,,,,,,

Bazooka Limon was no 'choir boy'

    Sunday Night - February 1, 1976

'Bull Ring' Plaza de Toroso Calafia, Mexicali

Fresh off his 'upset' win over Bobby Chacon in December 1975 - Rafael Limon
was listed as the #9 World-Ranked Featherweight.

On February 1, 1976 - Rafael Limon 'unmercifully' pounded an out-gunned
former Top 10 Featherweight - Nicaraguan - Vicente 'Yambito' Blanco over
    10-Rounds, to win a one-sided Decision.

After the bout was over, Rafael Limon walked over to Vicente Blanco's corner, and
punched Vicente's Manager in the mouth with a left hook.

Before the bout, Vicente's Manager had stated that Bazooka's win over Bobby Chacon
was not worth anything, because Chacon was 'a shot fighter'.

Rafael then screamed, 'Now your fighter is shot'.

Pepe, i saw this fight on tape shortly after it occured and believe me Chacon was well on his way to victory. Bobby was poised, in shape and on his game. Hadn't seen him like this in awhile. Limon got very lucky on the California butt rule of the fighter sustaining the cut can get no worse than a draw. And Bobby was not coming unhinged, if anything he had momentum.

    Good Job, Scartissue

I found the LA Times report of the bout - and it stated that Bobby was
in control of the bout, and was the recepient of 'bad luck', as he could
not win the fight after he caused the eye-cut as a result of 'his' accidental
    head-butt on Rafael Limon.

The LA Times had Bobby ahead......4-1-1 in Rounds.

I'll never forget how exciting it was when Limon came from behind to ko Rolando Navarette in '82(?)...he was strictly an arm puncher, with unending stamina...and tough as nails.
