As those of you who saw the Showtime broadcast last night already know, aging Mexican ring legend Rafael Marquez took a vicious beating from heavy-handed Mexican-American fringe contender Efrain Esquivias - rallying frequently but ultimately succumbing to a knockout after more than eight brutal rounds. It was reported by Jim Gray later in the broadcast that Marquez had been rushed to a nearby hospital for observation after the ringside physician noticed something disturbing in Marquez's behaviors and failure to respond to instructions. This was presented as being more urgent than usual procedure for kayoed boxers, who are often treated as presumed to have suffered a concussion and requiring some observation anyway. In this case the doctor was specifically alarmed by Marquez's state in the locker room. Dan Rafael reported this afternoon that Marquez is being kept inpatient and may need corrective surgery for a fractured orbital bone. (right eye) So, the good news is that his condition is not life-threatening and we can breathe a sigh of relief that he is not bleeding on the brain or likely to lapse into a coma or anything heart-breaking like that. The bad news is that he is almost certainly going to be forced into retirement involuntarily leaving three-quarters of a Golden Boy Promotions contract unfulfilled (though it's probably best for him anyhow) and this sounds like it could affect his vision and therefore his life outside the ring as well. Buena suerte y salud, campeon.
Thanks for the update IB. Always rooting for Rafa. One of my favourite fighters. Shame he can't 3 more pay days, but hey, whatever allows him to be healthy in his life.
this is so upsetting. He is one of the most entertaining fighters ever. True heart of a champion level boxer! He is on the downslide for sure now and this might be for the best.
Rafael is a true warrior...never the same fighter after the the Vasquez fights. Time he retires...wish him a speedy recovery and long life
So sad. He gave us some of the best fights we've ever seen live, one of the vey greatest trilogies of all time Ultra talented warrior, like his big brother Hope he is ok
hopefully he is not hurt and this only shows him he is infact human and he needs to hang them up.. HIS GIVEN US some incredible moments in boxing that will live on long after he retires... hope all is well
Admit his career fell under my radar (I've had big gaps) but always sad to see someone significantly injured in the sport. Suerte Rafa.
One of my favorite fighters ever. He should've retired after all those wars he had with Israel Vasquez. Both of those guys are first ballot HOF'ers and true champions. They waged some pretty incredible wars against one another, and were never the same after their fights.
 He participated in maybe the greatest (depending on your subjective tastes) pugilistic trilogy of all time. You should definitely watch those. For me they are better than Gatti vs. Ward, Barrera vs. Morales, Graziano vs. Zale, or Ali vs. Frazier, easily.
