But mandatories have no meaning in boxing anymore.

Ward hasn't fought one in 7 years. Cotto has been ducking his mandatory his years now too. Floyd hasn't fought his mandatory in 2 years.

And when have these guys been stripped?

 

No shame in losing to Ward at 168, especially if GGG is the mandatory to Cotto-Canelo winner by May or Nov 2016.

I don't understand why people make such a big deal regarding the weight GGG comes into the fight at. If he is comfortbale weighing in for a 168 fight at say 162 and walk to the ring around 165, whats the big deal? Fight at the weight you feel most effective, if if you are giving up 10 lbs or so.

All this being said, the Ward fight is by far the most meaningful fight for GGG. It's not even close.

164 is fair for both, unless Ward feels he can't do 164, then he shouldn't. Just cuz GGG says he can do 154 for Floyd doesn't mean Ward can do 164 for GGG. It's all up to Ward. Just like Dawson went down for Ward, now Ward's turn to do the same.

I say Ward should stick to 168 and use Golovkin's willingness to fight Froch and Chavez at 168 as a negotiating tactic. And if Golovkin isn't willing to go up, move on and face Kovalev.

 

Good post. But he wants GGG it seems more than Kovalev.

 

I don't understand that because it seems like he's closer to a Kovalev match than Golovkin. But it does make sense to fight Golovkin first and then go up, rather than go up and back down and end up being drained. Either way, sometime in 2016, I think he should be at the full 175 limit.

 

There would be a loss in prestige, reason being that Golovkin isn't exactly "proven" yet, there's lots of hype behind him and if he loses the first time he really steps up people will quickly jump onto the "he's always been a hypejob" bandwagon, even if the opponent is above his natural weight class and is Andre Ward. Count on this if it happens, I absolutely guarantee that's what the reaction will be.

 

I remember in an interview Ward sayin it won't be long till he moved up to 175, kinda giving the impression he was growing out of 168. So if he's struggling at 168, I doubt he'd do 164. Maybe just mindgames he using to persuade fighters to move into 168.

 

Ward vs. Kovaliv will be Hopkins/Trinidad all over again.

 

How does it make sense to fight Golovkin first if Golovkin doesn't want it? There's zero guarantee Golovkin will move up and fight him any time soon at all.

 

Canelo-Cotto is the biggest fight right now. Only guy out there really ducking is Quillin, Cotto-Canelo are fighting each other both are better more accomplished fighter's then GGG.
Canelo has been in the ring with him and, has said personally he has no problems with the fight after Cotto.

That fact is both have clout. They're not fighting GGG, while there fighting each other and he's fighting the Monre's of the world smh. Personally I think Alvarez & Ward both beat GGG but the fight's he's taking are bigger fight's. Say he beat's Cotto then fight's Mayweather next in Apr/May that's not a duck that's a bigger fight and same for Cotto.
GGG fighting ESPN Fighters while making excuses about taking a legitimate challenge is disgraceful for a fighter with his hype.
