Dr's do need to be trained or instructed on how to distinguish between fighters who can't continue and those who just don't want to continue and try and blame an injury as a way for a dr. to stop a fight and instead of getting TKO'd get a possible decision. In Cintron's case the dr. stopped the fight because Cintron said he could not cont., not because of a visible injury. The correct ruling should of been the dr. saying the fighter refuses to continue even though the dr sees no medical reason for him not to cont. In the Toney Rahman rematch. Rahman's cut was in no way serious enough for the doc to stop the fight, but he let Rahman dictate to him, by saying he can't see well enough to cont to fight a fighter like James Toney. He flat out admitted in in interviews by saying," I am not gonna fight a fighter of Toney's stature with a cut." Now a situation like this a doc should be able to recognize when a fighter wants to find a way out compared to a fighter who is legitimately unable to cont. Both Dr's in each case made big mistakes. It should of been a tko on both accounts.
In general life doctors are basically dolts who rely almost entirely on patients self-diagnosis in order to achieve anything resembling treatment for an ailment. This is no different in the Cintron/Rahman cases. If the fighters say they are in no state to continue then the doctor has to take their word for it because the doctor cannot be certain that there is not some injury that is not immediately visable or obvious. It would take a full medical and various tests that might take days (if ever) to be certain that Cintron didn't have an injured back for instance. In summary: Doctors are over-rated bums and the fighters faking the injuries themselves are pussies and should be the one's held accountable for doing so.
