I hate to say it, but was it really that much of a surprise that ol' dude was on something?

The only thing I can say is it's easy to tell he's hit hard times beyond the fact that he's still fighting at 200 years old because he couldn't even splurge for HGH, which wouldn't have gotten him caught.
