But unlike typical Toney fights, it looks like age is catching up to him, in terms of his lack of conditioning over the years and accumulated punishment.

Every said, well, gee, he LOOKS great walking to the ring for the Peter rematch. Well, he was knocked down by a jab and dropped a wide decision. I just don't think Toney can come in and do well at this point. But, he's fighting someone who was just as inconsistant as he was in Rahman.

I don't think the decision in the first fight was that bad (or was the fight itself). Rahman pressed the fight and had a consistent effective jab, but Toney landed a lot of counter shots throughout the fight. It was close. There was a lot of leather thrown at close quarters in addition to the hugging.

At this stage, even if Toney were somehow to change his ways and develop a good work ethic in the gym and at the dining table, I don't think it would matter much. He's old, been through a lot of fights under the lights and in the gym, abused his body, etc...He looks like a shot fighter.

  3. Very true good post, Toney's speech has been getting worse and worse, i wonder if he will even be able to pass a cat scan test..:huh

I am about drained of all interest in these two, as well. The winner may be able to somehow build a slight bit of interest win another good win after this fight, but not much.

If the winner wins this fight in dramatic fashion, it'll greatly help his cause. But another lackluster showing will not help them at all, even in a win.

Not a bad match, there's still unfinished business there.
Both fighters are equally faded, the loser should definately retire - maybe the winner also, with a last good win under his belt...
But if Toney wins convincingly he should try to rematch John Ruiz and then retire.

Let's put it this way: two years ago an in-shape, fit Rahman couldn't beat Toney when he was in the worst shape ever - the draw was the right decision imo. Rahman has declined a lot since then, but Toney will not underestimate him this time - he knows it's do or die. Toney is around 240 lbs now, that's not that fat two months before the fight. He needs to do a lot of sparring to get his timing back and the weight down. We'll see a better Toney and a worse Rahman in the ring this time than in 2006, so I'll say Toney wins by UD. Hopefully Toneys inactivity won't prove fatal...

I think we can all agree that this is an unappealing and somewhat insignificant match-up of a rematch that should have hapenned years ago, right after the controversial draw.

After watching Rahman's poor performance with Sykes and Toney's poor performance with Sam Peter, I'd say this fight is just not that exciting, despite the names involved.

It's a rematch that is years too late. But, you can bet that people will still tune in, just because these two have name value.

This fight makes about as much sense as Nelson-Fenech III, coming your way in June.

Pointless fight. Rahman should have gotten the decision the first time.

Rahman can retire Toney and then fight Chris Arreola, who will knock him into retirement, which will elevate Arreola's status. I don't see how this is meaningless. Whoever wins this will face a top guy in his next fight and get knocked out which will help clean out the clutter.

Exactly- I had the fight 116-112, and I picked TONEY to win!!!

This is a good case of, had the judges gotten it right the first time, we wouldn't be subjected to watching these two square off again.

But basically because of that unappealing draw, it makes perfect sense for promoters to squeeze a few more dollars out of these aging boxers.
