I can tell you first hand Rock is on point to weighin between 235-240. He is in tremendous shape with 2 weeks to go. He sparred 15 rounds on sat. using 3 sparring partners. 1st up 5 rounds with Travis Kauffman, then 5 rounds with Matt Godfrey, and finally 5 rounds with Joey Dawejko. He was dominant in all 15 rounds. He averaged between 65-75 punches per round, 40-50 were jabs, and threw 94 punches in the 15th round. We also box on a 30 sec rest period. Rock is well aware that this is a last shot type of fight, and has prepared himself to the fullest.
If thats all true then its very impressive. He'll be a real handful for Toney if hes in that kind of shape. Good luck Rock.
Good luck! He's beaten a couple of decent guys on his comeback in Zuri Larence and Taurus Sykes- this should get him over the top for a shot at someone.
He is "up" for this fight. Motivated by both who he is fighting, and the reality that time is running out. All of our sparring partners have been smaller guys with great defense, and great hands speed. All have stellar amateur careers, and all three have won multiple national amateur titles. Rock is making them miss, and at times even counterpunching. His performance in camps points to a convincing performance come fight time.
conditioner, assuming you are his conditioner, can you provide us with more detials of how he trains? eg sessions per week, is he lifting weights etc..
Rahman's weight had been steadily improving during his schedule last year. It's mainly his tendancy to really go to fat after a loss and he gets demorailzed that's been the historical problem. I did expect Rahman to be in top shape for this fight, even before I read this report. Looks like that'll be the case...thanks for the info, conditioner101! If Toney is also in as good a shape as proclaimed, then we should have a good fight. I still think their first one is underrated, there was a huge amount of leather getting thrown in that one for a heavyweight fight. No excuses for the loser about being out of shape or unfocused, either!
he was in OK shape the 1st time round but he just wouldnt let his hands go weather by design or nerves what ever he could have beat Toney to a UD no problem. All he needs to do is keep firing the jab out and when Toney moves to the ropes the keep the pressure on with short burts of combos. Toney only has that over hand righ to worry about at this stage so there is no reason rock cant win
This fight shouldn't be as bad as I thought then as both guys sound like they'll turn up focused, determined and most importantly in shape.
Actually....Rahman threw over 900 punches in that fight, and combined with Toney's thrown it was one of the highest totals for a 12-round heavyweight fight in history...something just a bit shy of 1600 punches I think it was. I thought he deserved the UD as well, 115-113, but when it's that close you can't get too upset about a draw. EDIT - went and hunted down the stats. Rahman threw 933 punches in the fight, Toney 633 (which is actually one of Toney's best at heavyweight too) While your average heavyweight throws 40-45 a round, Rahman chucked nearly 78. I've said it before, but Rahman is unusually busy for a heavyweight, even when he's weighed in heavy (such as Tua II and Sykes) he's kept up a busy rate. Sometimes you wish he'd swap quantity for quality, though. Being busy is good but I can think of a few fights where better shot selection could've made things a lot easier for himself. Toney on the other hand is pretty much the master of shot selection. Which is what makes this interesting, again.
