Your joking right? He was blowing out of his arse! He didn't look good from the start of the fight to the finish. Has someone who followed Lewis, it was clear to see from round 1 that the rumours of him being ill-prepared and not taking Rahman seriously were true. The way he was just lumbering forward with his hands down was clearly a Lewis not on song. Infact other than the Vitali fight it's the worst i'd ever seen him look. The thing with Lennox is that, if he didn't respect the other guys power he would show disregard and try to walk through them. Briggs, Grant and Vitali are some examples of this. Why did these guys not floor him? Is Rahman the hardest puncher of the three? Was it because Lewis was not struggling with altitude? Was it because his chin is usually reliable? It comes down to circumstance, which has already been mentioned. Rahman caught a bored, under-prepared and tired Lewis, with a peach of a punch at the right time. Lewis because of these failings, was in the right place for it to be landed.
Sorry Threetime, i haven't seen the fight in a couple of years & didn't recall Lewis being gassed in round 5. However, i understand that you are very knowledgeable on the topic of Lewis, so i trust you are correct. I totally agree that Lewis had poor preparation, his muscle tone was softer than ever, & he was lethargic with a lazily low punch-output. Also i know that he stupidly gave himself just 2 weeks to adjust to the high altitude & chose to appear in a "Oceans 11" scene rather than training with dedication.
I don't think the part I've bolded is correct. Lewis hadn't had sufficient altitude training so was definitely gassed, IMO.
Rahman has a good punch but I think the fact that Lewis was smiling like a jackass, totally not expecting to get hit that made the punch as devestating as it was. There are times when it looked Ali got caught playing around, but really, he always protected himself and rolled well instinctively. Shavers comes to mind.
I dont think so. I hate those BS contracts. Rahman wanted Tyson and he deserved the payday for preparing himself well. Douglas did the same thing with Holyfield, and he deserved it.
And when he didn't, which is what happened with the Cooper knockdown I've always felt. Ali still got up from that, but hey - it's Ali.
Yes as much as Ali got hit, he really did roll a lot of shots effectively. Lewis was like a deer in headlights.:admin
:deal Agree with this. I think he deserved a fight before the rematch. It would have hyped things up more if he defeated Tyson, OR it would have really made the Lewis/Tyson fight more intriguing imo if Tyson had got in shape and won. Running off with Don King's suitcase of money was one of the worst decisions in heavyweight history!
There was a documentary on the whole thing. Cant remember where I saw it, but it tracked Cedric Kushners office all the way until the last minute when Rahman disappeared and signed with King. That was a bonehead move and he definitely regrets it, because King screwed him big time.
