Scored a huge upset over Sugar Ray Robinson years before Fullmer and Basilio did. To be fair, Robinson was rusty after a long, post Maxim layoff. However, Jones also had wins over Johnny Bratton, Kid Gavilan, Joey Giardello, among others. What were Ralph's greatest assets besides a cast iron chin and good body punching?
Big 'Tiger' Jones fan here. Love how he would just keep coming and wear his opponent down. He was in some real exciting fights. Tough as teak. I have the following : v Danny Womber 3 v Kid Gavilan 1 v Johnny Saxton 2 v Tony Baldoni v Joey Giardello 1 & 3 v Victor Zalazar v Joe DeNucci 1 v Rory Calhoun 1 If anyone has any other Jones fights I don't let me know. I know the first 2 Danny Womber fights are also out there.
i posted a couple of days back in a tyson thread here....in the robinson fight his style was very like a 90's tyson...or is that just me thinking that ?
Does anyone else feel the Robinson fight was a lot closer than the scorecards? I still thought Tiger won but I had it 6-4.
no offense doc, but when i saw this thread i thought "who the hell knows anyone about tiger jones"? good on you and he certainly looks worth another look
Two things... 1-The fight between ralph tiger jones and robinson, was not close at all. We all knew Robinson was whipped soundly, after the fight... 2- Ralph Tiger Jones was a tough , tough fighter, along the lines of a later Vito Antuofermo. Except he seldom cut...
Tiger Jones never got a Championship shot at SRR. Ray, after he easily won the title from Bobo Olson, should have fought Jones to prove his loss was not a fluke 24 mos before, instead it was Gene Fullmer that got the shot.....and Robinson lost again.
