Round 1

Álvarez is jabbing at the Ghanaian man's signature turtle shell. Álvarez slashes a hook at the waist line. Tackie leans forward, swooping in to jab, missing and getting turned and hit with a couple of body shots. Álvarez is slapping up top with a looping hairline right. Álvarez is waving his left dismissively to stifle Tackie's jabs. Tackie is backing up and trotting a few steps to either side, playing keep-away. Flush jabs on the nose by Álvarez. Right hand by Álvarez. Body shot.

...except that Cherry never went anywhere (toiling quietly in the shadows off-TV, staying active, picking up a few decent W's, keeping his skills fairly sharp) and was game last week.

Tackie is rusty and looks it. He might even lose his distinction of never having been stopped tonight, based on how the 1st went - and that would be a shame, as it would really flatter Álvarez (who isn't all that good and doesn't hit that hard but is just putting a deluge on Tackie, and to my eyes the old man isn't taking shots as well as he used to...)

 

Round 2

Álvarez is throwing big right hands behind the jab, traveling in short arcs upward and then crashing down into Tackie's chin. Scything body hooks by Álvarez. Tackie is getting hit on the eye socket by every right hand Álvarez throws, on the nose by more than half of his jabs, and beneath the elbows with every body shot. Nothing coming back from Tackie. Álvarez even knocking Tackie back across 2/3 of the ring and reeling into the ropes at one point.

Round 3

Tackie suddenly roars to life and drills Álvarez onto the ropes with an overhand right. Tackie lands a few more but it becomes apparent that his best stuff doesn't bother Álvarez, who sizes him up with a sneer of disrespect and starts to swap jabs up-close with the smaller veteran. Tackie is now pushed back as the jabs come rolling in faster than he can mete out answers. Hard left hook downstairs by Álvarez. Tackie doesn't like it, his step faltering. Álvarez ducks a wild desperate left hook by Tackie, who spins around. Álvarez is wading in, hands low, throwing left hooks and looping rights at Tackie's sides. Tackie is signaling for a left turn with his jab, unable to hold Álvarez off. Hard 1-2 by Álvarez putting Tackie in a corner.

Round 4

Álvarez is swarming Tackie, keeping him beached on the ropes and slowly guiding him into a corner. Left hooks on the body and rights on the face by Álvarez. Left hooks now up top, jacking Tackie's head around. Nothing in response, and Tackie barely defending himself. The ref is giving him every chance. Álvarez is firing away madly, wanting to knock him down. It doesn't happen, but the ref does step in and wave it off.

TKO4!

 

Tackie was attempting to catch & slip punches, he's just too old and slow to do it effectively. I don't think he was ever truly hurt and you can argue it was a premature stoppage, but it was a lot of unanswered flush connections - and this was the inevitable result of cherry picking a retired 42 year old.

I hate that he now has a stoppage loss in the history books. :twisted:

 

It already retired Tackie, years ago, but at least he rode off with the distinction of never being halted...and now he no longer has even that. Could his purse tonight have been worth that?
