It was almost a certainty following UFC 130 that once doctors cleared Jon Bones Jones and Quinton Rampage Jackson that they would meet as the headline fight for UFC 135 in September. Now its official. UFC officials on Wednesday announced that verbal agreements are in place for Jones and Jackson to square off on Sept 24 in Denver, Colo with the light heavyweight title on the line. The only hold up for the bout originally were hand injures that both Jones and Rampage were dealing with, but medical clearances have been given and the fight is full steam ahead for UFC 135. Jones will look to defend his UFC light heavyweight title for the first time since a dominant performance over former champion Mauricio Shogun Rua in March to win the belt. Following the fight, Jones was contemplating having surgery on a torn ligament in his thumb, but further testing revealed that he could recover well enough just resting the injury and wearing a hard cast for a few weeks. On Friday, Jones went back to see his doctor to get the clearance needed for the fight, and judging by Wednesdays announcement that clearance has been given. Quinton Rampage Jackson will take a second stab at UFC light heavyweight gold when he faces Jones in September. Jackson won the belt by defeating Chuck Liddell, and after a successful title defense over Dan Henderson, lost the title in a 5 round fight with Forrest Griffin. Jackson will look to add another belt to his trophy case when he faces Jones this September. The bout between Jones and Jackson will headline UFC 135 at Denvers Pepsi Center, with more bout expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
The styles match up isn't interesting but there will be alot of hype. Rampage has just showed he has good tdd again but that was against one of the weaker wrestlers at 205. I don't rate Hamills wrestling. I think he looks sloppy and his overall game doesn't compliment his wrestling in MMA. They should have put Rampage in with another wrestler and possibly get the ko. Evans is getting royally screwed. The guy he beat is getting a title shot! Evans vs Jones is much more intriguign. Rashad has the wrestling, good power and camp rivalry.
Not even close. I think the UFC are trying to get as many big names on JJ's CV as they can. Rampage hasn't got a chance in this fight. He is basically the same fighter as Shogun, as in he relies on landing big counter punches as his opponent moves in, JJ is too long and too good to get caught like that. Rampage is also looking flat footed and follows guys round the octagon rather than cutting them off. Mismatch but then again who isn't for JJ at the moment.
This'll make what? 5 boxer/wrestlers on Jones's resume? I like Rampage, and he still has some bull**** power in his hands, but he doesn't stand a chance in this fight.
This is a crap fight. Rampage hasn't stopped anyone or looked good in years, he is now Quinton "Boring Points Decisions" Jackson. He is far too flat-footed, slow, plodding, old, toothless and tired for a phenom like Jones. This will be a horrendously one-sided fight. Quinton hasn't done enough to earn a shot anyway IMO. It should be Machida (who beat Quinton, and would give Jones a much tougher test and provide a much more interesting fight).
But he still has that big shot. you just never know! on form Jones gets this, but whose to say Page won't land a haymaker?
Obv that is the dream fight but I still think Jones dismantles the spider. Too big, too good at TD's and too smart to get into a striking game. If Anderson was a LHW it would be probably the best MMA matchup ever but there is no way on earth JJ can cut down so AS is going to have to come up. JJ wins this fight also.
Me. :deal If he didn't land a fight-ending haymaker against Matt "Hammer-Toes" Hamill, Rashad "Stanky Leg" Evans or Keith "The Dean of Glass Jaws" Jardine, he's not landing one against Jon Jones. :nono
Its terrible when the best match up at 205 sees one of the opponents resting ALL his hope on a haymaker. Quintons lost his ability to stop people because his striking is the same old ****. If you are going to just box then someone like JDS has the jab, feints, goes to the body, footwork etc Rampage is straight ahead and big punches.
Like I say, I think the UFC have just made this fight to get another 'name' on JJ's record as Rampage offers very little threat. Rampage will be on his back with JJ on top of him within the first 30 secs of this fight.
