I have been going through Danny Romero fights recently. Anyway I know boxrec is not always accurate in being able to determine how many fights a guy has had but I thought that was largely 1950’s and before. anyway getting ready to watch Romero’s fight in 95 with Javiar Cintron. Boxrec says Cintron is 6-2 while during the fight intro he is announced as 10-2? are records still so poorly kept in the modern era that there are still discrepancies in how many fights a guy has really had? just curious
Yep, happens with Thai fighters too. Not quite believable that Venice Bhorkorsor was losing to guys with '2' bouts in national matches near the end lol.
Also, quite a few of these would frequently lie about guys records to make the matches more palatable.
There were many fights on TV in 80s and 90s where boxer 'had' 10-15 added wins to make his record look more impressive. Those fights never happened, of course, but on paper 26-3 is far more impressive than 11-3, huh.
There's fights now missing, like it doesn't count BIBA. I've heard people mention fights in the 90's being missing too, though I think it gets worse as you go back
Sometimes records were padded, sometimes fight results aren't recorded anywhere especially if they are in "off the beaten path" areas. Wellington Wheatley was (according to BoxRec) 7-2-1 when he fought Roberto Duran. However, he was listed as having a more impressive record at the time. This was probably padding his record. Fel Clemente's career record according to BoxRec was 13-13-2. He was listed as having a lot more fights than that back when he was fighting. In his case, it's likely he had many more fights that are just not recorded anywhere.
True. And some funny reasons like this guy who changed his name to avoid paying parking tickets LMAO!!! https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-34975643 There was a fighter (or 2) that falsified their name to take on a novice Roy Jones, some speculated this was known in advance, but I can't find it as of now. Maybe someone here remembers and knows this guy? Anyways kudos to the job of boxrec, they have a lot of work on their hands and at times I have seen them update their records the same night of the fight, so I don't fault them for not always having the correct amount of fights.
Indeed, it's a great resource. It's not boxrec's fault people ignore the disclaimer and uncritically look at the records.
I really was not trying to be critical of boxrec, I think it is a great supplementary resource. I don’t use it daily, but I do use it often looking up records or fights that I want to view etc. I was just surprised that in the modern eras there was not a better more accurate record keeping system in place to keep track of those things.
When Boxrec was first set up in 2000, they had the task of retrospectively cataloging and documenting, every professional boxing match that had ever taken place. That is quite a big ask, even for an era with relatively complete records like the 60s!
That's an interesting case. Virchis was beating Mileiko for 4 rounds, then quit in his corner, literally went out of the ring. It was announsed as TKO (or now RTD) loss. Few years later Virchis' promoter changed the result to opposite - Virchis by TKO5. Virchis later said he quit because he was told that fight is scheduled for 4 rounds, so no one was going him to pay extra money for extra rounds. Strange excuse, of course, maybe the reason was different (like betting). Nevertheless, boxrec has corrected the result
Yo Philly, I made a thread months ago about 'Pinky Silverberg', a fighter so forgotten that the ring forgot he existed. He was a Flyweight champ in a stacked era, yet he wasn't even listed in the 'complete encyclopedia' of championship reigns! Crazy what can be missed.
The thing is, if they were more accepting of things like BIBA fights and ones from less legit bodies, they would also end up with more ones on the database that shouldn't be there. It's never going to be perfect, and there's always a tradeoff between false positives (having fights that shouldn't be there), and false negatives (not having fights that should be there). I think active fighters are more of a priority for them too. Stuff like this is on boxrec and probably shouldn't This content is protected
Love the guy a minute into the clip. He does a behind the back shot. Like that's supposed to be impressive fighting jelly-belly who bends over as if hoping to get clubbed.
