This is how I see it too. If Couture can be smart, I think he can wear down Lesnar. It will be hard to redirect all that power though. I also wonder if Couture is better at trading punches than Lesnar... I think he might be and I wonder what influence that will have. Lesnar is going to want the take down bad, but if Couture peppers him with good shots, he will really up his chances of getting him in down the stretch.
I havent been that impressed by Brock Lesnar's takedowns.. they are totally telegraphed. I think Randy will be able to really rough up Brock in the clinch like he did to Gonzaga... or simply use his boxing to pull it out. Definitely an interesting fight. Can't wait to see it. :bbb
Actually thats a good point, Frank Trigg and others say that his only takedown is the power double leg, but he is very good at it. He will probably have to try other means of getting Randy down, although even when you know its coming, Brocks double leg is tough.
Brocks double leg is very good and explosive but im sorry it will be hard for me to see him nailing it on Randy more then maybe one time. Randy is a fantastic Wrestler in his own rights his accomplishments speak for themselves and hes showcased it time after time in MMA and hes not exactly a one trick poney Randy has almost every wrestling technique in the book.
Good points - but the interesting thing is this: Lesnar is a classic collegiate style wrestler whose strengths lie in going after the lower body - whereas Couture is a classic Greco-Roman stylist whose strengths lie in gaining the upper body lock. So it comes down to who can control the clinch to go high - or low. Randy will have a hard time fending off Lesnar's double leg - while Brock will have trouble fending off Couture's upper body lock.
I think a lot of how the fight ends up will depend on which Randy shows up. When was the last time he actually had a fight? Its a long layoff from a real fight and time has not been on his side in regards to his age. Based on Brock's only performances, we can anticipate he will start strong and fast. If Randy can hang in there early on and avoid the danger (not get caught with a heavy shot from Brock and get Ko'd) while he clears any cob webbs or ring rust, than I can see him taking the fight in the later rounds. Putting the numbers down on paper, everything tells me Randy will come out with his hand raised. I can't see Randy loosing unless he gets caught with something early on while being cold. I am interested to see Brock's chin tested; that's not something that has been talked about much - the possibility of Randy knocking out Lesnar (not GnP TKO).
I still don't see how Randy's technique can nullify brock's power, speed and technique. Randy's hands have gotten better over the years but what little we have seen of Brock he has showed decent hands also. i'm still taking Brock.
Brock is the favourite to win at the bookmakers. 8/11 where couture is 11/10. I was favouring couture but am now not so certain. A lot of you are giving brock a big chance.
Couture analyzes Lesnar. http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=7536&zoneid=13 When Randy Couture finally returns to action on Saturday night fans at UFC 91 in Las Vegas are expected to give the UFC heavyweight champion one of the loudest ovations any fighter has ever felt before. But soon after the entrance, the business begins and standing across from Couture will be Brock Lesnar waiting to welcome the champion back to the Octagon. The match-up with Lesnar is very interesting simply because the former WWE superstar currently holds a 2-1 professional record and hasnt gone through many of the top contenders most would view he should fight before getting to Couture. But the champion understands why this fight was made and also compliments the fighters right underneath him hungry for a shot at the championship. I dont think anyones pretending that hes earned No. 1 contender status, Couture told MMAWeekly Radio recently. With (Frank) Mir, who caught him in a kneebar and obviously (Antonio Rodrigo) Nogueira out there holding the interim championship. Those are the two candidates probably most likely to be No. 1 contenders. Obviously Nogueira is more than a contender, hes the interim champ. I think its about putting on a big fight. The fight will likely be one of, if not the biggest fight, in UFC history in terms of viewers tuning into the pay-per-view on Saturday night. Couture isnt looking at this as a spectacle, hes focused on breaking down Brock Lesnar, and he understands the dangers he presents in the cage. Hes a big strong guy that poses interesting problems in the heavyweight division. He may not be the most experienced opponent, but still a competitor. I think having a similar wrestling background makes it an interesting fight, Couture commented. You dont find a lot of big guys that move as well as he does and he uses that wrestling base very effectively with his 275-pound frame. Those things coupled make for a pretty interesting fight. A major factor going into the five-round title fight is the fact that Couture hasnt fought since August 2007 in a win over Gabriel Gonzaga, but the seemingly ageless wonder has been staying busy in his off time and is anxious to see if Lesnar is ready for him. Ive been pretty active with the guys at Xtreme Couture. Ive been in their camps and training with them and theyre pretty active, so it wasnt a huge stretch to get my body back to top fight shape, stated Couture. Ive had a good 10 weeks to get ready for this fight, and I feel like Ive really come into a peak here... so Im ready to go. The early part of the bout may be the biggest storm that Couture will have to weather, as Lesnar has been an imposing force in the opening stages of each bout in his brief three-fight career. We absolutely know hes going to come out hard, said Couture. Hes a freight train; he explodes. Hes going to come out hard in that first round, and try to be overwhelming and we have to be prepared for that. Two other major factors in the fight come down to Lesnars relative inexperience in the cage. Through those first three match-ups, the Minnesota native has not taken a punch standing or been put on his back, which for a championship level wrestler is uncharted waters for sure. I definitely want to punch him in the face. I dont think anybodys stood in there and really give him a good taste of what mixed martial arts is all about, Couture commented about his strategy going into the fight. The other thing is Im perfectly capable of taking him down and putting him on his back, which is another area where I havent seen him yet. I have the wrestling ability to put him on his back just as easily as he can put me on my back. With so many different factors playing into the bout between Couture and Lesnar, the fight is beyond just a title fight, pitting champion against challenger. Its the old lion against the young lion. Its the veteran versus the new kid on the block. Its simply going to be one of the biggest fights in UFC history. It's Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar.
