Former UFC champion Randy Couture (18-10 MMA, 15-7 UFC) has been targeted for participation in the UFC's first trip to Boston. And if he gets his wish, the UFC Hall of Famer may get to face former boxing champion James Toney.

Fighters Only first reported the possibility of Couture's participation on the card. While no opponent has been finalized, Couture has repeatedly expressed a desire to face the former boxing champion.

Although not officially announced, UFC 118 is expected to take place Aug. 28 at the TD Garden in Boston. Two high-profile lightweight fights are currently on tap for the Northeast event: newly minted champion Frankie Edgar fights the man he deposed for the belt, B.J. Penn, in an immediate rematch of their recent UFC 112 bout, and two-time contender Kenny Florian faces standout Gray Maynard.

Toney, 41, won a UFC contract in early March after a protracted trash-talk campaign against UFC president Dana White and several mixed martial arts fighters. The former boxing champion sought the guidance of boxing and MMA coach Juanito Ibarra and at several points welcomed a fight with Couture (though he called out virtually every MMA star he could name).

Toney is currently training with Ibarra in Southern California as he prepares for his MMA debut.

What a load of absolute rubbish. And why does Randy always get a free pass? What on earth is the point in this crap.

Randy Couture could fight Kalib Starnes and draw numbers - that's why he gets a free pass.

I personally dont see this fight happening. Does Dana really wanna risk one of MMAs great Champions and legends getting KTFO by a guy with no MMA experience ?

Theres no chance of that happening in my eyes. Randy could be 100 years old and he'll still beat Toney under MMA rules. Either way its a sideshow bout. Surely theres no way this nonsense can headline.

Yeah, this is really going to be a crushing loss for Toney. I'm not sure who is interested in this freak show type fight, but someone must think this will bring in viewers.

well the commentators always seem to go on about Coutres dirty boxing. I'm a bit disappointed with the matchup, I'd much rather see Tony up against a straightforward striker.

I've not seen Tony fight for years, no idea what shape he is in. if Tony has expressed an interest in UFC, whose to say he's not interested in martial arts and may have done some judo or jujitsu in the past. Boxers are normal people as well.

and he should be able to afford the best coaches. I'm optimistic, if he can stay on his feet, I would love to see what he can do in a clinch.

    just got this from wiki

    Ultimate Fighting Championship

On January 2, 2010 Toney was spotted at [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_108"]UFC 10865[/ame]. Shortly after the event was over, Toney demanded to talk to [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC"]UFC66[/ame] President [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_White"]Dana White67[/ame] regarding fighting in the UFC. On March 3, 2010, UFC President Dana White confirmed that James Toney has been signed to a multi-fight UFC contract. Toney is allowed to continue boxing while under contract with the UFC.[2]68 Toney will be helped in his transition from boxing to MMA by [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juanito_Ibarra"]Juanito Ibarra69[/ame].[3]70Toney has expressed interest in fighting [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Liddell"]Chuck Liddell71[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brock_Lesnar"]Brock Lesnar72[/ame] or [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimbo_Slice"]Kimbo Slice73[/ame] is his Octagon debut.

Thats because Goldbergs and idiot. And Joe Rogan is as excitable as a PCP addict. Randy's boxing is average at best. He is good though at controlling guys against the cage and roughing them up. Vs Toney he'll have no problem doing that and will be able to do as he pleases. This bout though is the equivalent of bringing in a paraplegic to face Randy. Its completely pointless.

If Lesnar gets Mir in his first fight, why shouldn't Toney get Randy? He is one of the very best in the world at his martial art after all.

MMA has proven that being good at wrestling is a much better scenario for success than being good at boxing. This fight will underline it for those who haven't made that realization yet.

Randy is being matched very carefully. Toney is old and fat. He isn't dedicated to his sport and he hoped of talking himself into a big fight, much like he did with the UFC. Every shot he got, he blew. On roids versus Ruiz, fat and actually lost to Rahman, fat and actually got outboxed by Sam Peters.

IF Toney was dedicated, he would beat Ruiz and Rahman to be unified linear champ in line to fight for the WBO and IBF.

Now we are expecting Toney to train down to 205. I hope he gets there by training and not cutting 20 pounds of water like he did versus Jones!

On the flip side Couture is old as ****, slow as **** and I think his durability is decreasing each day. If Toney nails him, it could be lights out.

Toneys got great hands and will be good in the pocket but on both he has to have serious take down defence. Randy doesn't just shoot, he trips.

Toney was sweating off 16lbs. to make 168. I'm sure he can lose 20 lbs. before the weigh in for a fight at 205. Toney was 217 for his last fight in September of last year.

If Toney wasn't already in training for mma when he was following White around asking for a shot, it is still a little soon to be throwing him to the lions. Even if he's been at it a year it's still asking a lot. Since training with American Top Team, Kimbo is probably a threat to submit him at this point.

Buantello is probably as dangerous as they want to get for his debut.

This would never happen at 205. Look for a catchweight of about 220 if it happens.

Does anyone else think this could be a good fight for Toney?
