Would he beat other ATGs? Was it a lapse in judgement by Ray? Or was it Randy's night ?

Turpin vs Burley/Hopkins would be nice :bbb

It was Randy's night - and he was very talented, no doubt. To say Ray was completely prepared for it would be a lie, but he doesn't need any excuses. Turpin did give a good account of himself in the rematch though when Robinson had a dedicated camp. Almost won on a cuts stoppage, at that.

Turpin was at the very least a real good fighter and awkward stylist. He'd likely pose problems for plenty of great Middles. I think it being Ray's 5th fight in just about 4 weeks may have had something to do it with it though. Gave himself 2 months off before the rematch where, once again, he ripped the title away.

Well, he'd get thoroughly thrashed by some kind of hybrid Burley/Hopkins abomination (Bernes Burkins?). I mean, that's just plain unfair.

    He'd beat both.

If they were in their 130th some odd fight like Robinson. More convincingly too.

    Oooh, circumstances a *****.

Turpin/Burley would be so bad. Chuck has a bad chin though and wuld eat Randy's shots no problem and win a decision.

Exactly, Randolph that got Robinson would handle both of them much easier if they were put in the same predicament under similar circumstances because neither remotely approached Robinson's mileage by even that point in his career. At their best? Pretty wide decisions for B-Hop and Charley. That was my way around how Ray shouldn't of lost, despite Turpin's talent and skill level. Thanks for making me spell that out. :rofl

Although Turpin one of our best at the weight,I think he must have had his best night ever against Robinson, similar to Douglas against Tyson, with Robinson at his worst, away from home etc.His record has losses against men who, say,Hopkins would never have lost to.Bobo Olson would be the best of theseIMO.Nobody will agree with this but I put him on a par with Terry Downes, who beat Giardello,no Robinson but a good world champion later. Also almost beat Willie Pastrano who IMO would outbox Turpin.

Turpin at his best is a handfull & fit for any middleweight, he would hold victories & losses over many of them, just the same as all the other top men would.

as to Hopkins, there's no way Turpin would let that spoiler off without a fight, Randolph would take it to him and force Hopkins to man up, again as other middleweight greats would too. Hopkins isn't beating a best Turpin, nor any other real middleweight great either!

I agree. He was a helluva fighter at his peak though his peak didnt last long. His upperbody strength was uncommon for a middleweight. His jab was vicious and delievered in an awkward fashion. He could punch and he was able to break the timing of his opponent.

Funny enough, I've just been asked to do a fantasy fight of Randy Turpin against Chris Eubank for a boxing group on FB. It's the semi final of a tournament to find Britain and Ireland's greatest middleweight. Here's what I came up with, it was posted on FB yesterday.

Middleweight semi final Randolph Turpin vs Chris Eubank

Harringay is the setting for Randy Turpin and Chris Eubank. An array of former champs sit at ringside for this one. Jack Solomons has pulled out all the stops promoting this. Terry downes, Gus Lesnevich, Henry Armstrong, Max Baer and Rinty Monaghan are just a handful of the luminaries present, all have fought there themselves.
Eubank enters first, vaulting over the top rope to a mixture of boos and cheers. Turpin enters the ring to a deafening applause, he is the crowd favourite.
Harry Gibbs, the referee and sole arbiter briefs the boys at ring centre and sends them back to their corners. The bell rings and...
    Round 1
Eubank throws a tentative left jab as Turpin comes at him in a crouch, the punch goes over his head. Turpin moves about and throws two left jabs both landing on Chris's nose. Eubank comes forward landing to the body and Turpin ties him up. Turpin finishes the round with a good body assault finishing with a left hook to Eubank's jaw. It's been a feeling out round with Turpin nicking it.
    Round 2
Eubank comes out with more purpose behind hios jab, Turpin leans away from the shots. Eubank followsa up with a solid right to Randy's midsection. Turpin moves out of range as Eubank stalks. Turpin feints to the left and throws a perfect overhand right which shakes Chris to his boots. Chris smiles and spends the rest of the round on the back foot with Turpin feinting and throwing the jab trying to open Chris up.
    Round 3
The round opens with Turpin pressing, forcing the fight, punching from both hands. Eubank is happy to counterpunch but is having trouble landing to Turpins head. He switches to the body landing well but Turpin soaks that up, happy with his own work.
    Round 4
The round is fought in ring centre, both fighters working off the jab. Eubank throws some long rights but Turpin is too smart, he leans back comes underneath, lands to Eubanks body and claims his man.
    Round 5
A carbon copy of the 4th. Eubank is not doing enough effective work while Turpin controls the pace.
    Round 6
After a stern talking to by Ronnie Davies Eubank comes out and surprises Turpin with three unanswered jabs and a right over the top to Turpins temple. The fighters fall into a clinch but Eubank is having nothing of it, pushes Turpin away and attacks again. It's all a bit untidy now but Eubank is effective landing left hooks and right uppercuts. Turpin fights him all the way but it's a good round for Chris.
    Round 7
Eubank carries on where he left off. This time Turpin is prepared, he slips a long right, dips his knees and uncorks a left hook on Eubanks jaw. Chris looks surprised and smiles. Turpin ignores him and goes to work again forcing Chris to the ropes and unloading. Eubank seems happy there and lands some telling shots of his own but is he doing enough?
    Round 8
Turpin storms out straight into the fray, Eubank seems uncomfortable with the pace of the fight. Turpin keeps the fight at close quarters nullifying Chris who is only fighting back in spurts.
    Round 9
Turpin keeps up the pressure, can he keep up this pace? Chris is showing signs of wear and tear, blood streaming from his mouth.
    Round 10
Ronnie Davies is frantic in Eubanks corner. He slaps Chris hard across the face, "you're not doing enough Chris, wake up" Eubanks eyes open wide with surprise. He comes out meaning business beating Turpin to the punch. Eubank follows up a left jab with a huge right which catches Turpin flush. Randy's knees dip and he claims his man. Eubank tries to shake him off but Randy holds tight until Harry Gibbs moves in to break them. Chris goes right hand mad but Turpin is not getting caught twice. He claims Chris again until his head clears. With a minute to go in the round Turpin fires back, jabbing and hooking with both hands. Chris looks tired and spends the rest of the round defending, making Turpin miss.
    Round 11
Randy comes out but Chris meets him, planting his feet and landing big shots from both hands. Turpin feels Chris's power and gets on his bike. Chris chases but Turpin boxes well behind his jab, tight guard and quelling Eubanks advances. The fighters close in again for the final 30 seconds of the round. Both are throwing their hardest shots of the fight. Turpin returns to his corner with blood running from his nose and a welt over the left eye.
    Round 12
The round starts quietly, both fighters feinting looking for an opening. Turpin is happy to keep it at long range. Chris is looking for the big punch. Halfway through and Randy throws a lazy left jab, Chris sees an opening and a crashing right hand from the waist explodes on Turpins jaw. Turpin falls forward as Chris catches him with a cuffing left hook to the head. Harry Gibbs takes up the count as Turpin kneels in mid ring. Chris poses in a neutral corner as Turpin looks to his corner and rises at 8. Gibbs asks him if he is ok and he nods his head. Eubank moves in behind the left jab and crashes another right hand off the top of Turpins head. The punch catapults Turpin into the ropes and Eubank is all over him like a rash. Hooks to head and body stream in as Turpin tries to hold and clear his head. Harry Gibbs watches Turpin closely who now starts throwing some shots back The crowd are on their feet with 30 seconds to go. Eubank tires and Turpin claims him. Gibbs breaks them and Eubank throws a desperate wild right hand, misses and falls to the ground. Gibbs calls no knockdown and wipes Eubank's gloves. He advances again but takes two jabs from Turpin. He throws himself in omne last time but Turpin slides a long the ropes and turns him. Turpin backs into the centre of the ring as the final bell goes and the arena erupts. Both me walk towards Gibbs but he traises Turpins hand. Eubank although in despair is the first to congratulate him.

    The winnah, Randolph Turpin-

    Gibbs scorecard reads 115-112
