At 168 lbs. This would be an interesting one,and Randy would have no problem in wearing the extra few pounds. I say Turpin would beat Joe over the distance.
this fight could be for the overrated championship of the world. i think calzaghe would outwork turpin and win a decision.
yes, very much so. turpin is in the hall and joe will be there soon but neither deserve to be imo. turpin had a one fight career imo with his win over robinson. with that said, that was one hell of a win. calzaghe's resume is pathetic. he fought nobody for close to a decade defending his wbo belt and then only fought hopkins and jones when they were old. i would rank turpin over joe in an all-time list but i think joe wins the matchup between the two.
Surely,if an over the hill Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones can deck Calzaghe, there's a good probabilty that a peak Turpin could do it more than once in a fight ?
i agree. joe went down a few times in his career so this could very well happen but i was never impressed with turpin's fighting style and joe's speed and size might be the difference imo.
I'll take Calzaghe by decision. One thing to add, before the fight with Hopkins, I thought that Hopkins would prove to be alot physically stronger than Calzaghe...Wasn't true at all. Calzaghe had alot of core strength(I think he surprised Hopkins in this regard)
:-(( ..........yeah, talking like Calzaghe was at his best when he fought RJJ and Bhop. THAT version of Calzaghe will lose to a prime Turpin, but prime to prime, i'll slightly favor Calslappy.
I think that's bit harsh.Turpin probably showed how good a fighter he was just as much or if not more in the 2nd fight in New York. Before the first fight Robinson had been partying around Europe and wasn't in the best of shape although Turpin fought a great fight. For the 2nd fight 3 months later Robinson got himself in the best shape of his career on home turf yet Turpin gave Robinson all of the trouble he could handle.Robinson was ahead but badly cut and in danger of being stopped until he caught Turpin with a tremendous right hand.I certainly don't see Calzaghe beating a prime Turpin, but the trouble is Turpin's prime didn't last long and by the time he returned to New York to fight Bo Bo Olsen 2 yeas later he was already in decline due to his life outsde of the ring.
Turpin must have had something about him to get the win over Robinson. However I just checked his record and its a shocker. Turpin fought some of the poorest quality opposition I've ever come across and the standard of opponent varies wildly from fight to fight. In his 34th pro fight Turpin apparently fought a guy with a 0-3-1 record! The only other name on Turpin's record is Don Cockell who he managed to stop in 11 rounds. Interesting to note that in 1947 Turpin fought 13 times! Judging by the poor quality opposition he must have been a fair-ground fighter or something. Joe wins by majority decision because he's a far more modern boxer with fast hands and a tremendous work rate. I'm sure Turpin would be super durable but Joe would simply outwork him. I wouldn't pay to see this one!
Also just noticed that after numerous personal problems in 1966 Turpin commited suicide when he was only 37! How very tragic. Poor old Randy. RIP
:goodturpin was a fairground fighter.he was also a multiple ABA winner at schoolboy, junior and senior level.the 2 defeats on turpins record pre-robinson were down to the emotional problems that ultimately led to his death.i don't think he was all that well managed either and fought a lot of the time with bad hands. turpins win over robinson remains the biggest event in british sporting history except maybe england winning the world cup in 66'
I've actually been headbutted by a Scot for trying to tell him how overrated Calzaghe was. I gave him the 'Buchanan and Lynch were far greater and they're from your part of town' but he stll laid a small nut on me. Lucky I have the iron chin, eh?
