The records are most probably incomplete anyway. Even the supposed 0-3 opponent beat Austrian champion Hein Wiesner and held the Belgian light heavyweight title. Sounds no different from the average Calzaghe title challenger during his WBO reign, for example the great Branko Sobot.
You've got to give credit to the fairground fighter, Turpin, who went all the way and beat Robinson. But because he was the more dedicated trainer I'd go with Calzaghe
Yeah, you got me, I DID check Turpin's record on boxrec. I admit I don't know enough about Turpin and meant no disrespect to his achievments. His Robinson win was legit and stopping Cockell is quite impressive. All fighters fight their share of bums anyway, Calazage in particular. Turpins Record looks like he probably didn't get the opportunities to prove his worth until it was too late. Probably badly managed and clearly didn't get the help he needed with his personal problems. I was shocked to see the suicide at only 37. I still say Joe would be too modern, to fast and too fit for Turpin. Turpin was a 1950's fighter and i doubt he could cope with the workrate.
turpin was a diligent trainer when he a contender and was a natural athlete, strong as an ox and was dedicated to body building.he was a bigger hitter too.
