    Prime vs Prime.

We know that Marvin Hagler was the greater fighter. He had a long and exceptional run as a contender and a champion. From the late 70s through the mid 80s.

On the other hand Randy Turpin peaked and burned out very early for a variety of reasons. From the beating Sugar Ray Robinson gave him to his mental problems.

With that said when Turpin was a contender he was very impressive and his title winning effort against Sugar Ray was exceptional. Even in his loss later that summer he fought very well.

I think its an interesting match because of Turpin`s physical strength, speed and awkward style. He had an uncommon jab to go with good power. Ofcourse Hagler brought that multi dimensional style with his power jab from the Southpaw stance not to mention an exceptional chin.

How do you guys see it?

Turpin was a great fighter who probably didn't have the resumé of a great one. But I think he can give certain fighters a world of trouble and it is not out of question that he can beat Hagler on his best night. He could punch and he had one of the best jabs I ever saw.
I don't know how it ends, but Hagler did not always look invincible and Turpin might have been a guy who could upset him.

I was fortunate to see the Ray Robinson/Randy Turpin fight at the Old Polo Grounds
in 1951...What a fight !,What an ending !...Turpin that night was a helluva fighter who had a peculiar but effective style...Leaning back to avoid punches and countering with
punishing punches...Turpin cut open Robinson's eye in a late round, and the referee
was thinking of stopping the bout but Robinson went into overdrive in the 10th round and with a furious barrage stopped the game Turpin...What a finish !
This Randy Turpin ,as strong as Hagler, had a good chance to upset Marvin in my opinion...

Hagler wins but Randy gives him a good go over the distance.

Marvin takes it by around three points.

Randy could erupt with something nasty very suddenly ...but when you have a chin like Hagler...i think that component of Randy's ability is probably negated, Marvin is capable of sculpting something beautifully Nasty..with some classy and Constant aggression, ultimately i think Marvins Consistant quality would outweigh Randy's intermittant quality, Randy early could giv Marvin a run for his money, but as the rounds go by...i think Marvin chisels a late stoppage, the Boxing ability he showed against Sibson, interspaced with the aggression he showed against Hearns, i think Marvin has a bit too much versatility for Randy and would not give Randy the Consistency of approach That Randy could perhaps build a solid steady platform against, Marvins a rope bridge and i think Randy would be head into the cravace in the last third .

Marvelous Marvin Hagler, the primed version that beat Tony Sibson in 83' to the one that destroyed Tommy Hearns in 85', would've been too strong and fast for almost any version of Carmen Basilio at 160. Hagler by a mid to late rounds tko victory over Basilio.

My father was there as well. It was his alltime favorite fight--and my grandfather had taken him to Louis and Dempsey fights.

Just watching on tape shows what a formidable guy Turpin was at the time. Even the rematch. Man, that guy was in some shape. and very well prepared---not exactly an easy feat to do either--preparing to capitalize on Ray Robinson shortcomings to earn a victory.

I think he presents lots of problems for Marvin. This is another real tough hombre like all those tough Philly guys Hagler fought in the 70's. I think he can drop a decision in a hard fought bout to a guy like Randy Turpin.

when the licker had his head in the right place he's going to push anybody all the way but hagler was a monster with about as solid a chin as theres ever been.
another peculiarity about the late great turpin was his mix of his gentlemanly amateur roots and willingness to fight dirty.
the way marvins eye brows burst v hearns and turpins head waving he could well hagler bad enough to stop the fight ??????????
hagler is still the top 160lb man for me though.
in my opinion robinson v turpin 10th july 1951 remains britains biggest sporting occasion

t, as an aside : several British veteran boxing writers at ringside for the London fight between Robinson and Turpin, unanimously chose the Mickey Walker who flattened Tommy Milligan in London 1927, to have beaten
Ray Robinson, for what it's worth...

Mickey Walker was an incredible fighter, wasn't he, Burt? It amazes me that he rarely gets a mention when the greats of boxing are dicussed!

Turpin was just a bit before my time.I was just a kid but my uncle, who was in the RoyalMarines during and after WW2,told me he had heard of this Royal Navy cook who was doing really well. Also saw some of his fights.I never asked him this, but there are a few losses on Turpins record BEFORE he beat Robinson.Plus,he lost to Bobo Olson,a top man but not a great champion IMO.Hagler to me was a supreme champion,by virtue of the way he beat Alan Minter and other defences against hard opposition. As somebody who seriously knows more about Turpin than I do,could you comment?

Turpinr.I know you said you thought Hagler would be the winner.I meant the reasons for the other losses and in particular the Olson fight.
