Randy Turpin was Sugar Ray Robinson's toughest opponent.

How do I reach this conclusion ? Well, along with Jake La Motta,he was the only one to beat a PRIME Robinson, and when Jake beat Ray in their second fight out of six,he was a full middleweight while Ray was still at the welter limit. Plus,by all accounts,it was by a smaller margin than Randy managed during their Earls Court bout. All other Robinson losses came when the sugarman was passed his best, albeit still effective.

SRR hadn't trained very well for the initial bout though

SRR had 4 fights in the month leading up to the time he fought Randy albiet against limited opposition and a few ended early enough. Not to take anything away from Turpin though

I think Robinson was in fighting nick, he just had that "on tour" attitude against an oppnent not expected to trouble him. This shout isn't the worst thing I ever heard though. Look at the tough time Robinson had in II. Maybe that's as deep as he ever dug?

Robinson just didn't take the challenge seriously enough.

Playing golf in the day time and the night before the fight, cards on a evening and eating out every night with his entourage didn't do him any favours. Gainford was pretty concerned about it all as well, he didn't think Robinson was taking it seriously at all.

Turpin however was busy studying Robinson's style, watching his fights in slow motion to look for vulnerabilities.

It was just one of those nights I guess, the underdog comes in at his peak whilst the favourite comes in with a layed back attitude, not taking the challenge seriously enough.

tough opponent for sure, but tougher then Jake LaMotta?..
I doubt it....Jake beat Ray once, and arguably another 2 times.
They're first 5 bouts have been very close and tough matches.
