I always thought Turpin really proved how good a fighter he was in the 2nd fight.Sugar Ray got himself into his best ever shape for that fight plus Randy was fighting in Ray's backyard. He really did give him all the trouble he could handle. As for that right hand I don't know how Turpin got up from it he was stopped on his feet. It's a pity Randy Turpin's prime was so short.

Ron, I was there at that fight in the Polo Grounds. And the bravery of Turpin taking so many of Robinson's volleys and still being conscious was
truly amazing. But hurt he was, and the ref did the right thing in stopping the fight. Robinson was so energy depleted that as he passed my aisle seats on the way to the dressing room, He was virtually being carried by his handlers. I luckily was about 10-15 feet from the aisle, and will NEVER forget Robinson"s utter look of exhaustion, on his face...Robbie had a will to win, no matter what, that with his eye badly cut, the referee might soon stop the fight, he rose to the occasion as always. The greatest fighter I have EVER seen with the greatest EGO ! And Turpin seemed to go downhill after that fight. But that night he was a brave chap....

You were at that fight Burt? That's incredible I envy you pal! Yes you're right at the time after he got up Randy was taking a helluva shellaking from Ray and although he was ducking and swaying to avoid the blows against the ropes he simply wasn't firing back with anything. The referee was justified in stopping it, was it Ruby Goldstein?
That was the thing though with Sugar Ray,he had all the sublime boxing skills but he also had the heart of a lion, and never knew when he was beaten. It was a shame about Turpins decline which seemed to start almost immediately after that fight.

The guy in the middle isn't Kid Tunero, it's Jose Basora.

Really? I thought apart from the second fight, Fight 3 and Fight 5 were supposed to be W's on Lamotta's record. He said he thought himself the the series was split 3-3. Where did this myth come from?

Robinson was fit, don't be fooled by such ****... but turpin wasn't his toughest opponent either... the Era was crawling with Greats and Ray Robinson fought many of them and for 25 years too.

a lot of top men, never easy to "accurately" seperate them.

He may or may not have been robbed. No one knows because the fights aren't on film.

cross 'fight reports' checking determines questionable fights or not, the consenses at the time is soon revealed in these reports. You don't need the film.

I personally have no idea to the outcome of those fights in question, nor does anyone else without reviewing the fight reports!

No way Jakes was ever deserving of a win or a draw in this series other than the one he got. If anyone wants to put cash on it im ready.

Stanley Weston played up his close pal Georgie Abrams getting robbed vs Robinson in his publications. Not a single ny pap agreed AND john Garfield our very own esb poster was at that fight and sealed the deal with his own opinion of a Robinson victory.
    Myths die hard

Their 5th fight was scored 61-59, 61-59 in favour of Robinson with one judge scoring it 63-57 for LaMotta. Robinson called it his toughest fight.

I'm not a big enough believer in the newspapers to say whether one deserved to win or not without having seen the fight myself.

Basilio? Ray was not in shape for Turpin he was partying in Paris.
If you want to talk SRR's prime then that would be when he was a welter.
