How are resume and legacy different? Does the latter mean popularity or "greatness in the public eyes" kind of ?

I would go Jones , Hopkins and then Toney as far as best, yet as far as resume I would go Hopkins, Toney , Jones..

Jones was the most talented and physically gifted. He also comes out on top resume-wise because he beat both of these terrific fighters when all were in or close to their primes.

Toney was a supreme talent himself but didn't have Roy's athletic gifts. Plus he was inconsistent. He looked like a sure bet ATG against McCallum then like a lethargic scrub against Tiberi. He administers a master class and epic beating to Barkley then gets humiliated by Jones a few fights later.

Hopkins didn't have the natural talent of either Jones or Toney but he's the walking embodiment of the virtues of self belief and hard work overcoming all obstacles. His resume was ordinary until he made that amazing late career jump to Lt Heavy and became a legend.

Legacy is also based on consistency and longevity. James Toney was not consistent.

Artorias has good content, but is biased. TheGreatA has some great older videos (used to post here) and LeeWylie is also excellent.

    This.

Jones and toney went out their comfort zone and did amazing things. Bernard had a long reign but his competition wasnt always great and his career ended with some 1 sided beat downs so sheer longevity cant make up for the lack of weight class excellence from toney and especially jones. Jones got beat up a lot toward the end too but he was clearly washed up and the fact he was allowed to box means whoever sanctioned those fights should be in jail.

Jones not only won more belts, he beat both of them so it's the cherry on top.

    Resume: Hopkins, Toney, Jones
    Skills/Talent: Jones, Toney, Hopkins

With that being said tho, Toney is still in my top 3 favorite fighters of all time
