Anyone else think Berbick is underrated? He beat Thomas, Pageand Tate. Just because he got blasted by Tyson I think people overlook him. His style caused his demise in the Tyson fight, a come forward mauler. His chin was good and stood up to prime and motivated (his first title fight, to become youngest ever HW champ) Tyson for a couple of rounds. I think there is an argument to put him at the top. Afaik he didn't avoid anyone and gave Larry Holmes a lot of trouble.

 

I'll be the first to admit it is a hard bunch to rate, and I could be wrong. I was just thinking that if we allow for them to be at their best, then the guys above him, would probably be better.
However, if you pushed him up a few places, between Thomas and Dokes, I wouldn't have any real argument, because after Pinklon, and down to Tillis, who I felt was definitely last place, the others are rather interchangeable. On a good night, any one of them could have beaten the other, and on a bad night, they could have lost to just about anyone.
I do feel the top 3 are pretty solid, but I am not sold even on their order, I could have accepted any of them as the top, but I felt Witherspoon at his best was probably the best of them. Thomas beat Tim, but Tim looked off in that fight, and that was by far Pinklon's best fight, in my eyes.
If I wrote that list 10 times it might look different each time.
Like someone else said, where as Coetzee and Snipes, also, as they surely belong in there.

 

He did beat Thomas and Page, but they looked awful for those fights, for some reason or another. What I mean is for the ranking, we would assume each to be at their best. That is why for example I had him behind Thomas, and a few others.
However, he was good enough to be champ, and he didn't back down from Tyson (that is not an indicator of ability though), but I don't feel he is in the top 3 of those guys on the list.
In the fight I saw with he and Holmes, he didn't give him trouble, he was comfortably decisioned about 12-3 or 13-2 in rounds but I will grant that I saw that fight a long time ago. He was the first before Cobb to go 15 rounds with Holmes.
Wouldn't argue if someone put him in the top 5.

 

Arguably the best on the list, Spoon, was beaten by arguably the worst on the list, Smith. Berbick beat two of better fighters in Page & Thomas. These guys are really tough to rank. No consistency at all. Weaver is probably the only one to get the most out of his ability.

 

Perhaps an interesting thing to do is to judge their records against the others on the list. I think I have this right, but double-check if you want.

Where's Coetzee?

You gotta go with Witherspoon or Thomas. And Thomas won that one head to head.

 

Tubbs went 2-1, only losing close to Spoon.
