I think I would go: 1. Vicente Saldivar 2. Alexis Arguello 3. Julio Cesar Chavez 4. Wilfred Benitez 5. Antonio Cervantes 6. Ruben Olivares 7. Carlos Monzon 8. Miguel Canto 9. Eder Jofre 10. Ernesto Marcel 11. Victor Galindez
1. Arguello 2. Chavez 3. Saldivar 4. Olivares 5. Benitez 6. Monzon 7. Jofre 8. Cervantes 9. Marcel 10. Canto 11. Galindez
Get back to this when I'm on lunch. Marcel has little depth but taking into account the manner of victory I reckon he places well.
I'm no good at lists.JUst a few observations I'd have Galindez higher, probably over Cervantes, Canto, Marcel and Jofre I'm not sure on arguello's.He beat a lot of good solid fighters, but the average level is a bit lower than a few of the others. For me he lacks a real showcase or half-way dominating win over another excellent or great fighter. Not really a big complaint, yet enough where i'd doubt having him in the top 2. I'm thinking saldivar, Olivares, Monzon, Benitez tier one Chavez, Galindez, Arguello tier two then the rest tier three. Not a lot seperating them.I'm not sure about Benitez tier one, maybe i'm giving him a bit too much credit for the Cervantes win alone. This is the kind of group that could easily change quite a bit with closer scrutiny.
1-Julio Cesar Chavez 2-Alexis Arguello 3-Carlos Monzon 4-Eder Jofre 5-Vicente Saldivar 6-Ruben Olivares 7-Victor Galindez 8-Miguel Canto 9-Wilfred Benitez 10-Antonio Cervantes 11-Ernesto Marcel I´ll explain why, later......
Excellent effort. Good to see Arguello's run fully recognised and Monzon's kept in fair (imo) check. I keep looking to ease Benitez out a bit but when looking deeper am yet to find a way too.
Yeah, I think it's hard to say clear cut who has the superior resume with a lot of these guys. To give Alexis the benefit of the doubt though, he does have the Olivares win, which although not a dominant win, at least showed Alexis beating a highly skilled great who was on form (though of course past his absolute best). I think I'd rate that win higher than say Monzon's victories over Napoles (who never looked right at the weight) or Emile Griffith (who was in his Eubank-pattern-balding days and had lost a lot of prowess by that time, though still good enough obviously to beat a lot of solid guys, which he did). But with Arguello it's more about the quantity than the quality... Same with Chavez I suppose.
Cheers JT. I think a lot of Benitez's wins look better on paper than his actual performances, and that might be what's behind that feeling. E.g. Fights with Weston, Curry, Villa and even Palomino imo, were real struggles for him. Just on Monzon, I also mark his resume down a tad because I felt Valdez outhustled him in the second fight and edged it, but I know that's one of my off-beat opinions and its probably fuelled by a latent wish to somehow have Hagler rank above him.
